You keep saying that im asking a lot out of a freshman but Gaulden is a freshman. And playing safety is a lot easier than corner. It doesnt matter if he can stop a screen if they can throw slants and outs all game because he cant turn his hips quick enough

From last summer:

Size-Strength-Speed
Displays close to ideal height but will need to add bulk to hold up playing in the box and avoid being engulfed by bigger, stronger blockers at the next level. Still has good, wiry strength and explosive pop to his frame. Has good speed and takes sharp pursuit angles to cover ground from sideline-to-sideline.

Instincts/Recognition
At times he can be a second late in his diagnosing but overall reacts to what he sees in both the run and pass effectively and takes good positioning. His instincts will take him to the football. He anticipates well and is fluid enough to open hips out of a tight backpedal and transition quickly to break over the top of routes.

Coverage Skills
Despite not having prototypical measurables for a safety prospect, he masks that with an aggressive, physical style of play and the ability to produce on all three levels of the defense. Angles are generally sound in his pursuit and he will rarely get caught out of position. Does not show a lot of man-to-man experience but has the athletic ability to match-up with slot receivers from depth or aligned in press. Possesses the movement skills to turn and run with receivers when in press or mirror from depth and closes the cushion quickly on underneath routes. Possesses good plant-and-drive skill.

Run Support
He tracks the ball well from depth with direct angles in pursuit giving him the ability to stay on track and fit up well to deliver a big hit on ball carrier. He has good range to chase down plays running the alley and setting the edge. Shows the ability to read blocks to work through traffic and generally keeps his frame free to locate the ball carrier. Runs through with good explosion as a tackler with shows solid wrap ability.

Bottom Line
Gaulden has upside and could be a real physical presence in college once he adds the required size and strength to his frame to match his aggressive style of play. If he can bulk up and polish his skill set in some areas we see a quality safety at the BCS level.

That's what you get for trying to be nice on VN! Instant man love legend status. I haven't seen him post in a while. Where you at Nate?!?!

Safety in the SEC isn't fun. Do you trust him to tackle Gurley, Henry, and Taylor all game at safety? Also playing an off man type of coverage will allow him to open his hips and break while he's developing some of his coverage skills. Richard Sherman doesn't have the best hips in the world but he's a world class CB.

If he has to tackle them by himself all game then our front 7 is playing terrible. I do trust him to tackle them when called upon. Maybe not as soon as he steps on campus, but after a year or so of S&C, no problem

Most of that sounds like breaking on the ball from 8-10 yards back but they said he had the abiltiy to play up close which I never said he couldn't. The last sentence even suggests they see him as a safety at the next level

I think in an interview Gaulden said the coaches wanted him at CB. CWM knows what he's doing on the back end.

Sherman has a bigger frame and also has elite recovery speed for his size

If they do then great, if he plays there his whole career ill eat my crow....I just see him as a Free Safety... JRM was also a safety at one point before they switched him to LB

Hey BB I was looking through the Gaulden thread and you apparently nailed the call on Payne to nickel. I didn't realize these position "fights" had been going on so long.

Anyway, it may have changed but in the Nov '13 video below at the 1:40 mark Gaulden says we want him at Free Safety.

We could possibly still get him at CB though. It depends on how far you are willing to go.

“I mean, he has all the upcoming seniors recruiting hard, and they have something to believe in now that he’s here,” Gaulden said. “That’s good to see.”
“I just like (Florida State’s) tradition and how they just put a lot of defensive players into the NFL draft, and I just like where they’re coming from, as far as how they play on the field,” said Gaulden, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 40 safety in the 247Composite. “You like to see that kind of stuff as a defensive player.”
“I had a great performance at the track and was able to catch the first half of the game,” Gaulden said. “I was able to go down to the locker room and talk to all the coaches before I went back out to the track, so it was an overall good experience. I talked to Coach Jones, (defensive coordinator John) Jancek and (linebackers coach Tommy) Thigpen. It was quick since it was at halftime.”

He has continued to stay in frequent contact with Thigpen, who’s serving as Gaulden’s primary recruiter for the Vols and has built a particularly strong relationship with him over the past few months.“That’s who I talk to every week — on a weekly basis, for sure,” Gaulden said. “We’re really tight. I mean, he might be one of the realest guys that I know. He’s a mentor. I mean, no matter what college (I attend), I know I’ll keep in touch with him.”

Unlike many of the teams recruiting him, Tennessee has expressed interest in playing Gaulden at cornerback rather than safety. “They’re talking strictly corner for me,” he said. “If that doesn’t go well, you know, they can always put me at safety. But they really like me, on my frame, as a cornerback, so we’ll see where that goes. That’s fine (with me). Like I said, I feel like I’m an athlete. I play the wide-receiver position here (in high school). I can play the cornerback position. I can play the safety position. It’s all about the love for the game.”

It won’t be long, Gaulden said, before he’s ready to narrow the list of teams he’s considering. “By the summer, I’m trying to trim that list down very low so I can get ready to commit pretty soon — probably before the end of the summer,” he said.

Pulled for the Gaulden thread. We'll see where he plays. We'll have some good options though. :good!:

This is quite an old quote, long before Moseley was on board. I don't have any skin in the game where he lines up, just wanna see him have success on the field.

Moseley wasn't seen as an instant impact guy. He also hasn't proven anything yet...... I was posting where he said the COACHES were recruiting him to play CB. Hope CWM see's it the way I do.

The point was that the coaches view could have changed since the quote was given literally almost a year ago.

After going back and reading all those early quotes I get the idea that if he wanted to play as a freshman, you're right, the corner was where they saw him as a best fit for early playing time but he has some weak areas there and with a little added size his natural position is free safety. That's the way I read the chronology of his recruitment and while I think we still need major help at corner I don't know if he is going to be one of the guys. It seems quite possible he redshirts and comes on as a free safety in 2015 and beyond after he's added a little more size.

Could you see Elliot Berry at one of the safety spots?

I know this sounds crazy, but my dark horse for the starting corner opposite of Sutton is Evan Berry. I could see him coming in and having an instant impact just like sutton did last year. How do you feel about his skill set Breakerboy? I know he's fast, but how about his cover skills and whatnot?

The safeties in our class are elite. Gaulden has the athleticism to play CB as well as FS. He's a combo DB, that I want on the field along with TKjr and McDowell in the future. Those two guys are erasers in their own right. Everybody brings up Gaulden coming up in run support the other two are a bit better to me(no slight at all). Gaulden tackles like a big hitting CB to me. Kelly is built like a little pitbull in the box. I like him a lot in the run game. Competition isn't questionable after seeing him in the all-star game. McDowell is a freak from what I hear from my Georgia boys who've seen him in person. He's a rangy nasty safety that I want on the field too. I also want Gaulden coming up as well off the corner. He'll get a lot of action with #23 on the other side. Which means a lot of big hits will go down. Ask Denver how being hit by Seattle all game went down. Lol

He's got elite tools and is exposed to NFL level coaching with an elite safety for a brother. Waiting to see him here. :) He'll compete early and probably is the best athlete in our DB class. And that's saying something. :)

We have TK and Randolph at FS, and we have one out of three proven CB. The only direct quote from coaches or Gaulden has been they want him at CB, the safety talk has all been second hand from VQ.

I don't regularly agree with BB, but if you're going by words out of the mouths of coaches and recruits, they want him at CB. Not once has a coach or Gaulden said otherwise. Maybe they've changed their minds, but some of you guys are just so adamant despite Gaulden himself saying CB.

Unrelated, do coaches rotate CBs like WRs? With Berry, Payne, Gaulden, Sutton, Moseley, seems like we could have a lot of options.

The DL hurt Denver more than the DBs did. The pocket repeatedly collapsed on Peyton

I like Gaulden at CB because he gives the DB group flexibility. He could play any spot which means Jancek can move him around in game.

Also, we kinda need him there. Our CB group is really thin. Payne is the only natural corner. Everyone else is an athlete CWM will have to teach.
