"Many have asked about Darrell Scott and Tennessee is very much alive in that one. We continue to believe that right now it's a 50/50 race between the Vols and South Carolina and both staffs will be on hand this weekend for Scott's state championship game as Havelock will go for its third straight state championship.

While certainly Scott and former teammate Kendal Vickers are friends, Scott is especially close to South Carolina wide receiver Pharoh Cooper and having Cooper in Garnett and Black certainly is helping the Gamecocks right now.

If Tennessee doesn't land another back in this class of that caliber, and for the record it looks as though D.J. Law just won't make the cut academically, don't look for the Vols to reach as they will save that spot for 2015."

SN: Man, how hard is it just to pass HS. All you have to do is basically show up. I played 3 sports in school, and did golf whenever I could, and still graduated with honors. To be honest, I really didn't even try too hard either.

Granted, I'm not in the kid's shoes and don't know what he's got going on in his personal life, but C'mon Man.

Apologies for the rant.

I think you're being a little harsh here. There are plenty of kids who just have hard times with tests and don't come by the smarts naturally. Fact is, we don't know the circumstances and it is always unfair to criticize someone in this way.

Each child has a different retention rate when it comes to learning. My oldest daughter has to study for hours on end in order to retain something similar to myself. Her sister is two years younger and if she reads something or you tell her something once it is locked in forever.

Another big issue is that some aren't pushed to learn in high school simply because they are the star athletes. For example, I had the star h.s. tailback in my U.S. History class, he cheats on a test and makes a 5, I wouldn't have believed it except he was laughing when he showed it to me. The highest I ever saw him make on a test was a 50 and he passed the class with a B. It also helped that his teacher was the assistant head coach at my school as well. If some of these kids aren't made to learn, they will not put in the effort to learn.

That is absolutely true. And since we do not know specifically which is the case for Law, it is unfair to criticize. However, it is also true that MANY of these kids put forth little to no effort in classes. With no child left behind concepts that permeate high schools today, it is possible for many of these non-qualifiers to qualify with an effort and attitude change. But you are correct, that there is no way for us to know which is the case with each particular kid. So it is unfair to criticize him without knowing him.

Every person is different. period. some folks learn "by the book", some people just have common sense and have 0 desire to learn whats in a book. my brother in law doesnt GAF about whats in a book. guy does math naturally. he was bored in school.

lots of public schools, in E Tennessee are set up to succeed in athletics, keeping a larger # of students to participate in the most prestigious classifications. the student to teacher ratio drops off significantly...some of these kids may get things naturally as visual learners, or, have a high retention rate. Some kids learn differently than others. higher numbers of students means more potentials for distractions. hence higher prices for desirable "private schooling".

not everyone has the same opportunities that we have. you never know how someones situation at home can effect their schooling?

It just irks me to criticize an individual people know nothing about. In college, I studied with other students who knew the subject matter and concepts better than me, studied just as well as me, but continually scored 20 points lower that I did on tests. IMO, only the parents, teachers, and close friends have the authority to question or call out a student's efforts.

Sorry, I'll end my rant now. Back to Derrell...

It's crucial we get Scott. You have Hurd recovering from an injury and Paulk. Marlin Lane is the most experienced guy coming back. Stack some talent so we can redshirt and develop IMO. It's too bad Tom Smith is leaving---spare part that was way overrated but the kid could play special teams.

Passing and qualifying are not one in the same.

Paulk is a beast. It looks like he's bulked up significantly as of late. Scout has a good free read on him up now.

We've found out about this the hard way with our RB depth. Young and Hill are two prime examples of this.

I believe in doing this at all positions. I don't like taking guys just to have extra bodies. Now a lot of schools don't get the luxury of taking only who they want, but with CBJ in charge I don't believe we have to worry about that any more

I will tell you this, everyone isn't blessed with book sense. It's similar to athletic skill sets. Everyone isn't the same. Nor are all parents the same. Structured family environments be it single or dual parent households play a huge part in this.

You can think about it like poker. Some people are dealt pocket aces and some of these kids walk up with a joker and a Monopoly get out of jail free card

My USC guy is not conceding this one, but has begun to use language suck as

May be scared of Davis
We have bigger needs
Etc

He is clearly interested in TN

I'm not as concerned as you are. Don't get me wrong, I love Scott and think he'd be great. I am pretty happy with Hurd/Lane/Paulk for 2014 though.

The RB class that turned it for UT was Henry, Jamal, Stephens and Stevenson. The latter moved to LB. UT has been its best when it had a plethora of talented RBs on the roster.
Garner, Hayden, Stewart

I still think TK2 could play this position .

Steverino. Unlikely that Paulk plays next year with that injury. Possible but unlikely.

I may get ripped but I think it's him or adoree. One more lineman and one more offensive play maker which adoree counts as, and we close up shop. ( I know, I know. You make room for adoree. I agree.)

If you are basing this off room then I think scott and Paulk are directly connected.

Paulk says he will be here in the fall.

VQ has pretty much said its scott or no other RB. That the spot will be saved.

If scott commits Paulk will be informed he is grey shirting IMO
