'14 SC DT Poona Ford

Did someone measure him when he visited? A bunch of nonsense about the height. Has nothing to do with him being a football player.

You could specialize a bit within the DL interior: have one starter be essentially a NT type DT, where they specialize more in clogging up holes, taking up the OC and an OG, and shutting down runs up the middle.

Then another, taller DT that is more of a pressuring, penetrating DL - he'll have the length, the long arms, and the pass-rushing ability up the middle when the DEs have been focused on along the edges and have taken the TE's and RB's attention. Sounds like Ford is more of the first type DT than the 2nd type. It's always great to be able to get athletic monsters that are 6-4, 330 lbs and still have the explosiveness and quickness to clog up OL, escape their clutches and still chase the QB out of the pocket. But they are pretty rare....

But as was stated above, Ford still has some growing to do....

Latest from SC 247:
Hilton Head (S.C.) four-star defensive tackle Poona Ford made an unofficial visit to South Carolina on a Saturday and was able to bring his father with him. This was his father’s first in depth look at the Gamecock program, and I’m told he was impressed by what he saw and heard from the coaching staff. Ford was already familiar with what South Carolina has to offer but it was still an important visit from a timing standpoint.
As I’ve mentioned previously, Ford has a tendency to change his mind quite a bit and comes away impressed with each program he visits. I get the impression the Gamecocks are still in this one from speaking with a few sources, but I don’t feel comfortable projecting where he’ll end up. I think Tennessee, Louisville and Ohio State are all still in it as well. I will say the South Carolina staff is aware of some of of the obstacles facing them in Ford’s recruitment and are doing what they can to overcome them. Impressing Ford’s father and earning his trust is a good start

Interesting update.

I think SC is in this one more than we think...would love to hear how his TN visit went.

I was about to say how did s car's 247 get an update instead of ours. But then realized their update had exactly zero quotes from ford or his dad. And their update sounds like it's based completely on hearsay and conjecture.

But still. Where's info on UT visit?

Paul said he would be reaching out to him and get an update ASAP.

FWIW the update on Tennessee's 247 site is nearly identical.

"Ford couldn’t be reached for comment after his visit to UT on Friday, but the Vols still are believed to be one of the teams to beat for the Top247 defensive tackle from Hilton Head Island, S.C. South Carolina still appears to be Tennessee’s main competition for Ford, who has referred to the Vols and the Gamecocks as his leaders at different points over the past few months.

Sources close to Ford have indicated that he often changes his mind about which direction he’s leaning, which has led to conflicting reports on whether UT or South Carolina is the team to beat. The reality is that, even if Ford was to make a decision in the near future — and there doesn’t seem to be anything imminent at this point — his recruitment probably won’t be over for several more months. For now, the Vols remain in good shape.
"

This is contradictory of some of your past stances.

How so?

Height and weight are 2 different variables. One can be strong and explosive and not be as tall as others that generally play the position. While a person who is giving up a lot of weight at a position that demands the ability to block 300lb guys for 60 minutes is generally going to struggle.

Not to mention, one plays against a higher level of HS competition and dominates. While the other played against little to no competition and was undersized for the position he was being recruited at.

Completely different.
