'14 SC DT Poona Ford

I think it must be good news, and I am sure I don't understand recruiting very well, but it seems to me a committed Ford would be better that a hopeful promise of a commitment.

Unless we already have something that is not public :dunno:

I think this is what is going on here.

I think this is what is going on here.

I think we have one or both of these guys already silently committed (Barnett or Williams) and then they are wanting to hold the final DT spot for a bigtime player like Elam, Humphrey's, Lambert or someone else who may pop up.

They also may not take another DT if they would rather use it on Malone or Jackson or someone like that.

(I have Mosely at OL now)

Here is how I see it shaking out.

OL- Mosely or Blair (whoever commits first)
DT-Barnett
DT-Williams
DE-Hendrix
ATH - Berry
ATH-Berry
DT/DE/CB/WR - Lambert, Humphreys, Malone, Jackson, Elam, Garrett ect

Also you take more of those guys if you lose people throughout the next 8 months.

Passing on a recruit does not always work out. Hopefully in this case it does. If I were Ford, it would be tough to hear there is no longer room at DT, yet there are no DTs committed publicly. Hope it works out better than situations like passing on AJ Turman as "we had bigger fish on the line". If a kid is not willing to go public, I would not count them as a commitment. Saving commitments and having them commit later to try and ease the pain of a loss as some have suggested, is just pathetic IMO. Most fans who follow recruiting have a pretty good idea of how this class is going to end up recruit wise. Those who don't, won't care/have any clue who committed anyway. If we are turning away 4 star DTs now, the coaches better hope the kids they think they have on board stick. I would be taking commitments of kids ready to go NOW and willing to shut down their recruitment.

Hope we get at least 3-4 DTs higher on the board then. Fort not saying "we are full", or "no room left" makes me think we are rolling the dice here.

This is what I am saying too...I think we have maybe 1 or 2 silents but are rolling the dice on the last spot or so and don't want to take Poona for that last spot.

Sounds a "little" like the D. Booth situation. But, it might be true because we are in on some nice DTs.

This seems risky to me(but I dont know about silent commits or anything), but I guess we wont know for a while. Just hope come late January we are not saying how we should have taken Poona...

Why?

Because, regardless of all the great things Butch has done in the 7 1/2 months he has been here, there are people on VN that are going to find something to complain about. They can't help themselves.

Keep in mind, this staff did this last year with the juco who wound up at auburn. Then blanked on replacing him. Not a lot of DTs to go around.

How do you think this meshes wit the late Elam offer? They offered Ford well before Elam. Did he suddenly skyrocket to the top of the coaches' board?

I have no idea about that. It does seem strange to me. I just dont see them having a legit shot with Elam. He seems like he is almost finished with his recruitment.

I agree with you. I think it gives him another hat on the table and one that is close to home. I think he is headed to UK.

Seems to me Ford has had plenty of time to commit, if he really wanted to be a Vol he should have committed to us months ago. CBJ knows what he is doing Sometimes these kids get caught up in the drama and think they are special then oops to late..

GEEZ!!! Step away from the thread and take a deep breath. If we in fact told him that his position is full have a little faith in the staff. This isn't the nfl draft where you take the best available when its your turn. It is so much about timing now. We can all agree that there are "must takes" that we'd take no matter what the situation is. Ford is an awesome prospect but he is not in that must take category (maybe a year ago, but my how things have changed). It doesn't seem like we have burned a bridge with him either. I think c2p's message to Ron would have been different. Also, there will be plenty of 3.5,4 and 5 star decommits before nsd. And as much as I want to believe Vic, most likely our class will lose someone that is in it now. Not everyone is fanatical about UT like we are, so if we miss on someone it's ok. This next class has started out awesome, and there is every indication that it will end that way. If we all know that DL is a huge position of need, don't you think the coaches get it too?

If we have 5 players committed in August the staff isn't recruiting well -- if the staff has 20+ committed in August they are moving too fast and passing up on talent.

We are in a good spot right now folks, and we should be extremely happy and proud of that. We can speculate who has what spot and so on, but we've trusted them up to this point and they haven't disappointed. Until they do so, have some faith.

Maybe Mosely is coming in this weekend and if he doesn't commit we open up the spot to Ford?

Definitely possible. I don't think the coaches told him that we were "full". I find it more realistic that they changed his offer to a conditional one, and he interpreted it as them being full. It seems likely that we would tell him that we are still very interested, but that we have some other guys that feel like they are ready to pull the trigger. We don't want to blindly oversign and end up looking like jerks.

And really, he may have just cooled on us or felt better about someone else. Only Ron knows c2p's identity. It seemed like c2p was a UT fan, and maybe he felt guilty for getting our hopes up and didn't know what else to tell us about the decision. In the end I think we are fine here. Only time will tell...

No, I know who C2P is and he isn't a TN fan at all. He likes Butch a lot though.

Maybe Poona was waiting to commit to try and get his teammates some looks from schools who were recruiting him? That is a pretty common thing now a days. At least it is with GA recruits. :) Maybe SC recruits have picked up on it.
