'14 SC DT Poona Ford

vereen
Lambert
Obrien/Carr/Saulsberry/juco DT
Jwilliams

not a bad starting DL imo - not elite but not a big dropoff from where we are this year

a lot of how they will be will hinge on whether vereen really becomes the guy in year 2 - i think he will be - his burst imo is special

I also think JW showed some good signs rushing the passer early this year

if Lambert is as good as advertised then it could be a very athletic front especially on passing downs potentially capable of putting a lot of pressure on the QB

especially if you are also bringing CM/weatherd

i liked poona - but at UT over the last few years so many terrible decisions have been made that any bad call CBJ makes in recruiting won't even make the top 100

we told 2 current heisman QB candidates to look elsewhere for Christ's sake

I think that Poona being a shade under 6 ft tall hurt his evaluation. If we were using a 3/4 that's a lot less of an issue.

Don't forget about Clark at DT he is only a Jr. And Jaylen Miller who is a freshman this year.

Then you also have Lewis at DE. I think he will be very good next year if he keeps progressing.

Then we also have Vickers and Malik Brown. I thought Brown was going to be a DT after seeing a quote saying his weight was up to 270 but the Official roster says 251.
So I think we will have some good depth and see it looking like this:

SDE: Vereen / Vickers / Malik Brown

DT: Saulsberry / Clark / Carr / Barnett

DT: O'Brien / Lambert / Jaylen Miller / Mosley?

WDE: Williams / LaTroy Lewis / Henderson

Not to bad to me! A good juco DT would be awesome but taking Mosley would be great as well.

Also, with all the talent coming in at LB we could move Maggit to DE were he really belongs IMO. Maggit with Vereen on opposite ends Wow!

Poona sighting....Hey c2p....whats up?

3-star DT and #Louisville commit Poona Ford announced that he is reconsidering #SouthCarolina again. http://ow.ly/rTC9C ($)

I thought usce had numbers issues and was taking a very small class. Maybe they just lost someone?

I'd still take him in Orange. He's Owen Williams IMO, but with 4-5 years to play.

Owen is much taller though right? I've heard Poona is 5'11>

That's the reason we cooled on Poon right?

Williams is listed at 6'1. Maybe he is 6'. Either way, 5'11 and 6'1 IMO means little if the kid is powerful and can disrupt the OL. Ford has proven he can do that at the HS level. I would have liked to have seen the kid a Vol. I get the staff likes other options better.

I think it was that and his arm length that caused our staff to cool. It can be difficult for defensive linemen to disengage from blocks and get separation when they have short arms.

I guess that's true. I just remember hearing we stopped pursuing Poona because of size and he was between 5'10"-5'11". I don't think the staff would pursue Owen if he was that small. JMO though

A lot of USC people familiar with the situation felt he was being pushed out of state. It's not surprising considering that he is away from his hs coaches now he says he committed too soon. I really don't know if they have room for him. Although there is more room now than earlier, they'd have to miss on someone. CBs and DEs are more important.

Nope. In fact they got two D-line commits this week (Abu Lamin and Dante Sawyer).

With their small class, and 4 DL already on board, I just don't think there's room @ USC for Ford.

In fact, with the Lambert situation going down the way it did, that opens the door nicely @ UT for Poona....

They may have more unexpected attrition than they thought with more guys rumored to be going pro(although some should wait). A projected starting cb is transferring because he wants to play pro baseball, and will have a hard time making the baseball USC team, and a possible medical loss may happen. They also expect at least one may not qualify. I still don't see room for Poona though as they may take as many as three more CBs for a position that is devastated. They have to make room for that group, so any upperclass player who has not played will not be forced out, but told they have to transfer to another school if they want to see the field.
