'14 SC DT Poona Ford

Why do you think he is under 6' when all of the recruiting sites have him at least 6' or 6'1? Even maxpreps has him at 6'. Where are you getting your info?

Because most kids' high schools add an inch or two to their height measurements and a lot of times recruiting services do as well

So I am confused. We were all in on this guy before and would have welcomed him to the team. How come the height situation didn't come up when we were really pushing for him? This doesn't make any sense.

it did come up. that bump that i just did was from June i think

Edit: July 30th

I've always been on the Poona train and you can see my displeasure of us stopping recruiting him earlier in this thread.

I'd like to have Poona at UT but if we land Craig Evans that will be okay too.

I really want him to be a part of this class but I know it's not going to happen. We need to add another DT and I like him quite a bit even tho he's not the ideal height.

He could definitely play rb for us though...Hurd's too tall

Yeah but he's too short to play QB. People get too hung up on that stuff. He's a football player. But nonetheless I still can't see how that inch makes that much of a difference (that's not what she said). Leverage is much more important for DTs IMO. For DEs I can definitely see where height/arm length is a big deal so you can separate from blocks but with DTs I just don't think it's as important bc they're trying to occupy blockers to free up the LBs. And in passing situations you don't need height or long arms to bull-rush. Jmo.

I'm not buying this "he is too short" nonsense. Poona Ford has freakishly long arms, his wingspan is 80 freaking inches. Having long arms allows him to keep OL's from getting into his pads and he can gain better leverage than the OL more often than not. Him being short and powerful IMO gives him a center of gravity advantage and probably a bit more quickness and explosion.

Typically coaches prefer taller DT's to bat down passes and disturb the QB's vision but i think when you have a guy built like Poona who can get great penetration up the middle, the height stuff goes out the door.

Playing devils advocate, why aren't there more NFL DTs under 6 ft if height isn't that important?

Side note, did Rod Clayton play this year? I hope he does well.

No one will win this argument because if he goes to Louisville and plays well everyone, will say he couldn't do the same in the SEC.

No way. Fans love to talk about guys who got away when they do well somewhere else. Every time Poona makes a tackle this fall this thread will be bumped within seconds.

Yes but the counter argument will be "he's doing this against Wake Forest what if he had to play Bama?"

Because most people have arm wingspans proportionate to their height. Poona has a 80 inch wingspan at 5'11. That is the wingspan of a guy that is 6'8. That is freakish and probably explains a lot why he is such a good DT.

Oh the threads UTVolwarrior98 will bring..."Why can't we get players like this?"
