'15 FL DE Marques Ford (FORMER UT commit)

Hate it for the kid. Hopefully he lands somewhere and has a great college career. Is there anything else factoring into this like his grades or anything? Or is this simply a numbers causality?

Staff is reaching out to schools on Ford's behalf to help him in his abbreviated recruitment.

Least they could do. I'm sure coaches dislike this even more than us. Afterall it is them who knows these kids personally and communicates with them regularly for months. Not counting sitting with their families in many instances.

Maybe I'm greedy, but I do not think you can have enough defensive linemen.. Rotation is the key. I would have rather dropped a RB that has a upside and kept MF. IIRC, the 98' NC game we rotated 12-13 lineman.. but then again.. I'm old!

JMO - I don't think the staff ever felt confident that they were getting Kyle Phillips. When Kyle signed up at the last minute, that is when the problem at DE was created. This is why they couldn't tell Ford earlier in the process.

This is the most plausible explanation

This right here is 100% fact and due to a numbers crunch they had to drop somebody and the place where they had the most to part ways with was DL. Timing sucked but the kid will land on his feet at a good school probably Fla.

We don't know that much about the situation. Ford could have been told from the beginning that this could happen if we were able to get a stud OT. That we had several DEs, but want to keep him if possible. I'm sure more info will unveil itself in the next two weeks.

Exactly this. Most offers and accepted offers have contingencies attached to them. Most likely Ford was aware of the contingencies when he accepted and went public knowing that the offer could possibly get pulled later.

I hate it. I am not a coach but he looks like a Maggitt or Weatherd kind of player that can help at end or in a linebacker spot. There is going to be a team that is super excited to get him and they will be rewarded by his play. JMO. Good luck Marques. I will be rooting for you.

Tough for the kid if we said hit the road.

But this is a business and when you are competing at the top these things happen - not just at UT.

I have no problems with it. It happens and will happen both ways for UT.

This is recruiting.

Yep, people get confused bc the word commitment is used.....the actual commitment from both sides doesn't happen till signing day.

Hard to comprehend how you pull a 4-Star DE who is 6'3''/233 and runs a 4.6 (40 yard). In CBJ we trust, but as a fan I don't like it and I am sure it wasn't an easy decision for coach. Knowing we are going to have a few de-commits on NSD or earlier, it is hard to think it is all about numbers or the surprise DE Phillips or a prior commitment to a JUCO (which you only have for 2 years). One thing is for certain in the SEC- you become dominant with speed DE's and Ford sure looks like he fits the mold of a potential excellent DE.

So, where are we on the 36-hour clock? I want to know who is the reason we let Ford go...

Less than 24 hours. Kelly is the obvious choice, and possibly Patrick. I think it boils down to A) Phillips was an unexpected surprise and B) if you have to cut somewhere, we seem to have a surplus of DE. They all can't play.

I hope this doesn't affect our future recruiting in FL. Hopefully, HS coaches won't hold it against us as they did Kiffin in Pahokee.

Should be fine unless the Orlando Sentinel picks up story. They'll bring it up every cycle when the Vols land a player that area.

This happens. Happened with Ga and Carver Columbus. FSU and Lakeland HS. Miami and a couple of Dade schools under Shannon. Meyer and Gainesville/First Coach HS.

Unfortunately its part of game. CFB isn't like basketball with early signing period or baseball with splitting scholarships. The numbers don't always work out.
