'15 FL OL Tyree St. Louis

Blair will be the lt the next two years. Jones could play after blair leaves as I think he could be a decent lt. Stewart is a guard. I think the lt after blair will be in next year's class.

Stewart is a true guard. He doesn't have the foot quickness to be a tackle in the SEC but he has the potential to be an all-conference interior lineman.

Exactly right... In addition, effective tackles need long arms too and Stewart doesn't have those either. If you want to see how a tackle with slow feet and average arm length performs... See Kerbyson this year when he played tackle.

Got to get somebody else that can really play the position if Blair isn't as good as hoped and our stellar OC/O-line coaches decide to insert another G into the position. For some reason they have an aversion to playing Kendrick and getting him more game experience. Kerby will be going back to RT most likely since Jashon proved himself. Need to solve the issue and remove the temptation to mess it up after next season.

Montrell Hardy and another Cinci poster in another thread talked about watching Mahoney's O lines up there... He definitely seems to be the weakest link in this staff. Doesn't bode well in the SEC. I agree about supporting them, but this is partly why there's chatter about him - track record.

I don't disagree much with Montrell on many things because he knows his stuff but I think his point was Cinci had a lot of penalties on the Oline with Mahoney there. A counter point is those teams lead the Big East in rushing for two of the years he was there. He also had an Oline that gave us the most rushing yardage in 15 years this past year and that was with implementing a new offensive system and our running backs weren't anything remarkable. I'm not sold on the guy but I'm willing to give him a year to improve and find some players.

Well, we can all pretend it's ok. We can act like Butch has some miracle powder for our OL. When everyone around us is getting elite LT prospects, and we are landing projects like Hall, there's an issue. I think Hall/Jones are solid players, but neither one are great LT prospects. Doesnt mean they can't play LT one day, but they are projects at LT. For many, Jones is a RT/G .

So many here fail to realize just how bad we are OL wise. Without Dobbs we are sitting 5-7 at best right now. How do you think the tone around the Hill would be right now if that happened? If Blair doesn't work out, we are in trouble. It's all fun and games to make fun of me as I repeat myself over and over again, but when 2016 comes around and 100000 threads are started about how our OL will cost us a real shot at the East title, don't say I, and many others, didn't tell ya so. At this rate, unless Balir works out, we will be banking on either another Juco or Hall/Kendrick/Jones to be a LT in 2016. From where I'm sitting, outside maybe Kendrick, that isn't the spot we should be in after 4 years of OL recruiting.

I'm not pretending we don't have OL problems. I also don't get why the same thing needs to be said 100 times. I don't necessarily disagree with what you are saying. I just don't see what point it serves to say it over and over. Are there still issues with this team? Yes, but we are light years ahead of where we were when Butch got here. We all know how you feel about Mahoney and the issues with the O line. I won't post about it again.

Let's give Mahoney til the end of 2015 before he's thrown on the vol nation chopping block. A huge turn around would not be unheard of and sometimes continuity and stability are just what the Dr ordered. Mahoney isn't going anywhere this year so let's try and be supportive. Maybe a little positive energy can get the OL going in the right direction.

Yes, thinking negatively on VN is the reason why our OL has struggled. Imagine what would happen if we only express positive thoughts?

Very funny on the Mahoney comments. If I think back a couple of years ago when the elite OL for us were Juniors, same group was complaining because they thought they underachieved. As seniors, everyone thought they under achieved even though they had best rushing yards in recent memory and fewer sacks with the same Justin Worley.

Now Mahoney is really terrible because he replaced an entire OL and didn't do it with elite players immediately. IF we just had some other OL coach he would have molded this ragtag bunch of guys into a championship caliber OL. IF only we had Walter Matthau or Billy Bob Thornton, they could have done it.

So this year we will have 3 people in the 2 deep that Mahoney didn't recruit and the rest are his. I would judge him on this year much more than what he had last year, unless everyone believes an elite OL coach is out there waiting that would have replaced the entire OL, lost multiple starters of that OL to injury and somehow still had us as a top 5 OL in the SEC. IF so, who is his this coach?

That is not championship caliber depth at all. They have two elite starters and after that little to no high end depth on the returning roster. They have some good freshman DE's coming in, but you have no idea what you are going to get production wise out of a true freshman. We've seen what happened to two of those from last year's class as they are already gone.
I disagree. Vereen and Lewis are solid back ups and I'll take my chances with the freshman coming in running third.

Not worried about DE.

Not sure he possesses the requisite length?

Many people don't even view him as a T, let alone a LT. This is the exact issue I'm talking about. Oh, well, I think he can play LT... St. Louis, Allen, etc are known to have the abilities to play LT. We need one of those guys instead of banking on hopes and dreams. Maybe, just maybe, Mosely can play T. He's a big boy. I don't know if he can play LT, but he might help out at RT. Jones is a RT/G. Hall is an anomaly, so we will see what happens with him down the road. I'm ambivalent towards Hall at LT. RT is not the issue, LT is. We need Blair to work out. If Blair works out, Kendrick/Mosely/etc lock down RT, and Thomas locks down C, we should be ok. If Blair doesn't work out, well, we might be in serious trouble...

Back to St Louis. I would love for UT to land one of these top flight LT prospects. I'm not sure why they aren't getting them... there is an immediate opportunity to start.

Tackle is the one position that we've struggled to recruit this year IMO. Everywhere else the staff has just been great in recruiting. Still think we land a surprise at tackle before this class finishes.

OL in general hasn't been on par with their other recruiting... at least by the eye ball test. I hold on to hope that they just have a profile that will start to show up this fall after having some guys in their program for a couple of full years. It is concerning though.

That and the retention of DE's that we've argued over is the only two holes in their recruiting I see. There's kind of some weirdness at RB but that is a position where a new guy can step in and play.

Their DT recruiting has been very good with the report that Sawyer may be staying. This year they've obviously had big success.

Skill and speed position recruiting has been very, very good.

QB looks good. Good thing Jones saw something to be concerned about with Ferguson and signed Dobbs.

Richmond will be Tennessee's Benedict Arnold IMO. Not only did he hold us back from recruiting other tackles, but he actively recruited for other schools while he was here and that is just flat out unacceptable for a kid born in Tennessee that has a chance to play for and redeem his in state institutions prestige.

Mississippi and Alabama can have Memphis IMO. Skit awn outta here.

And St Louis...still...playing football and stuff?

Never forget

It doesn't have an impact any damn way. Saying we should think positive and maybe the OL will play better is one of the stupidest, most naive things I've heard.

Actually its not that far fetched. The human psyche is fragile. Positive energy won't have an affect on the kids, however constantly posting negative comments or being a very loud vocal negative fan CAN affect the play of the young men trying to get better at the position. Sometimes positive reinforcement is the answer. You know how your significant other pats you on the head and tells you it's ok, it happens to everyone. She's assuming one-day you will get it right.

Very true. Positive thought is even more critical in day to day life. It's sad that some haven't figured this out yet.
