'15 FL OL Tyree St. Louis

I'm pretty sure it's been reported numerous times that we slow played a lot of OL recruits to see what Richmond did. I'm pretty sure the staff thought if they signed someone like Allen or St. Louis then Richmond may bolt due to competition. It was a huge mistake. Honestly, Id be ok with taking 1-2 OT projects at this point. They may not have the best offer list, but we have to obtain some length at LT.

I mean why not just take the OT that want to commit then kick them to the curb when someone better comes along? I mean that is the Butch Jones recruiting philosophy according to Leb. Why wouldn't our scumbag coaches be taking this approach to every position?

Yeah, holding out for Drew before and especially after his commitment cost the staff other very likely OL targets IMO.

Was it Richmond who we brought in on a visit and he was recruiting against us? Who made that decision?

In terms of OT recruiting, that's the approach we should have taken. Whether people like Leb or not, he's 100% right on his thinking for OT recruiting if what you said is how he really feels. Right now, we have 3 guards and a G/RT committed. Hall, Boulware, and Stewart are G. Jones is projected by many as a G too, but he'll get a shot at RT IMO. Hall will too. Maybe even Stewart. However, who really knows with this staff what positions guys will play here. We played Thomas at RT when he's a natural C and had never played RT consistently before. We put Sanders, a RT prospect, at G when he played OT in high school. You can't tell me Kendrick is worse than Kerbs/Thomas at OT. After the OK game, Kendrick should have received a real shot at OT in a game. He may have looked bad in practice, but I wanted to see what he looked like during a game at RT/LT. 42 sacks? Seriously? I'd been trying Kenrick and Sanders at the OT spots. Kerbs and Thomas have no business playing OT. Come next year, Kerbs/Mosely/Robertson need to battle it out for the RG spot IMO, and Sanders/Jones/Kendrick/Blair should battle it out for the OT spots. Thomas should be our C come 2016, but he needs to get much stronger by then. But hey, I'm just an arm chair coach. What do I know..

What I do know is, we currently are going to prom alone. We set our eyes on one person, they chose someone else, and now everyone else seams to have the attitude that I really don't like being a second option. Allen, St. Louis, etc where second options to Richmond. We slow played them, and now we don't have any true OT players. Hall and Jones aren't the answer at LT IMO. Everyone around us seams to understand that you have to have length and size to play LT in the SEC. I think we missed that memo. I'll also say, and I'm no expert, just a fan like you, that I've seen Blair play. He's not a LT. I said it in his thread over and over and got blasted for it, and then he doesn't start this year and people wondered why. He's a RT all the way. He's a beast run blocker, but he struggles pass blocking due to his hand placement and footwork. So, next year will really be a good indicator of how good a coach Mahoney is because Blair is playing LT unless Kendrick beats him out. If Blair balls out and holds his ground pass blocking, then Mahoney is going to deserve huge props for it. If not, well, we are in trouble, roster and coach wise IMO.

Hall is a tackle but he is more of a project.

That's my point. If you are going to get a project, get someone who's really big and long. Hall may have a great wingspan, but odds are, a 6'4" player isn't going to ball out at LT. RT, ok. LT, probably not. RT isn't that big an issue. LT is, especially if Blair doesn't work out.

For the record, I don't believe any really good SEC team is starting a LT under 6'5", and most are 6'6" or bigger.

I agree with you I doubt he's the lt of the future. Has anyone heard anything about ray raulerson?

He's playing center. Pretty sure he played G/OT in high school. Really odd IMO to move Ray to C when Thomas was one of the best C in high school in 2013.

This thread reminds me just how messed up the recruiting and roster development has been for the O-line. Butch's Achilles Heel so far IMO. They need to get it fixed this off season.

I'm not sure Mahoney is the coach who can fix it. I really wish that Sam Pittman had been retained. I think this has been CBJ's biggest mistake to date.

Mahoney may prove to be a decent OL coach; but I have no doubts Sam Pittman is a good one.

I agree. Most on here are sick of my comments about it. I guess there is nothing that can be done about losing Pittman. But if there is not serious improvement next season in that O-line, Butch needs to find a better guy.

When I saw Pittman's presentation on the O-line recruits in a video that UNC produced several years back - I knew they had fixed the O-line issues. He is a pro - knows development inside and out. Chaney knew it because he was also an O-line coach at times coming up the ranks.

Did anyone else know that Leb felt this way?

:wink2:

Leb plays his cards very close to his chest. Very hard to get a read on his true feelings on most topics. All we can do is keep chipping away in our group sessions and maybe we can get him to open up.

Your safe here Leb. This is a safe place. You can let your feelings out here.

The jury is out on Mahoney as an OL coach IMO. Granted, some of that could have to do with the OC and the blocking assignments on many of these drawn up plays. But his units up here at Cincy weren't all that good either, especially fundamentally. Most penalized OL in the Big East all three years he was up here.

IMO CBJ should have already made that move. It could do absolutely nothing but spark some new OL recruiting interest and IMO the development could not get much worse. After 12 games you should see some type of improvement, out of position or not. About 550,000.00 a year would have a lot of quality OL coaches in play.

I'd have celebrated some holding penalties this year as it would have meant we at least got a hand on a man.

I think it is a combination of the OL coach and the OC and the blocking scheme for some of the designed plays. The blocking scheme is really tough, especially when it comes to pass protection for OT's to be effective at it. They have to truly be elite talents at that position. Cincy's OT's struggled with it consistently for 3 years.
