Four-star cornerback Justin Martin of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla., is ranked the nation's No. 11 juco cornerback in the 247Sports Composite.
But a couple of teams already are standing out to him, and one of them seems to have a slight advantage.
The four-star cornerback from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla., said LSU and Tennessee are at the top right now on the short list of schools hes considering, and he admitted that he likes the Tigers probably a little bit more than the Vols at this point.
Theyre at the top right now, but Im still looking at other schools, said Martin, who's ranked the nations No. 11 junior-college prospect and No. 2 juco cornerback in the 247Sports Composite for the 2015 class.
I like LSU a little bit, and Tennessee, too. Right now, I like (LSU defensive coordinator John) Chavis, (secondary) coach (Corey) Raymond. I like what theyve been telling me. When I went down there to LSU (for a camp), it was cool working with those coaches. Since then, my family, they came and made an in-home visit Coach Chavis and Coach Raymond and my family liked them a lot.
Right now, were just waiting for my official visits to try to decide, because UT has to do an in-home visit, too, and my family also likes UT and (defensive backs) coach (Willie) Martinez a lot.
The 6-foot-2, 192-pound Martin said hes scheduled to take official visits to Georgia the weekend of Jan. 16, Tennessee the weekend of Jan. 23 and LSU the weekend of Jan. 30. He said hes also currently planning to take a midweek visit to Auburn, probably between his trips to Georgia and Tennessee.
Oklahoma made a good impression on Martin during his first official visit the weekend of Dec. 13.
It was a good visit, he said. I got to talk with all the coaches Coach (Bob) Stoops, (cornerbacks) coach (Bobby Jack) Wright and they were all cool. I got to watch practice. I got to see my position, and I got to hang around them during practice, and I got to hang around them the entire weekend I was up there.
It was a good experience.
The trip to Oklahoma technically was the first visit Martin had taken since he arrived at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M earlier this year out of Overton High School in Nashville, Tenn. Junior-college prospects arent allowed to take official or unofficial visits before completing their second junior-college semester.
He said hes now enjoying the opportunity to take a closer look at the schools hes considering.
Its just fun being able to get out and visit these places, Martin said. Talking with the coaches and stuff was cool before, but now its good to take trips and actually see the schools.
Playing time is a factor in where Im going. But I feel like, with my work ethic, I can go anywhere and I'm going to be able to get on the field. Other than that, Im just looking for a place where I feel like I can be for the next four years a place I wont regret once I get there.
Martin, who will have four years to play his final three seasons at the school of his choice, said hes not planning to make his decision until after he has taken all five of his official visits.
Ill probably announce on signing day, he said.
This is exactly the logic I was seeing. Great athlete wants to be seen on TV. This defense will turn heads and the UT uprising will be televised and hyped. Great exposure for all of these kids!Btw, if we want to sell Martin over LSU, we need to get him in a room with Sutton. With pro potential being his number one, LSU has the advantage in Chavis, DBU, and the obvious pipeline of DBs that are coming out every year. Tennessee needs to sell future success. Sell Martin on one fact: come to UT, you not only are most likely guaranteed a starting spot, but you will be opposite one of the premier corners in the SEC for the duration of his time here. Teams will have to pick their poison between him and Sutton, and that means more opportunities to show his ability to scouts, especially behind a D-line as talented as ours with Barnett and Curt on the outsides teamed with K-Mac, Tuttle, Obrien, and Owen Williams on the inside. Maybe LSU has the better history, but we have the better future, and that is what really matters here.
The situation with Martin is much less clear. As he has told several earlier this week, LSU is standing out to him at the moment but this one seems far from finished. Tennessee was the team with the plan to place him at Northeast Oklahoma Community College when he left Overton High School in Nashville early after his senior year.
It's also worth remembering, Martin isn't a player that grew up in Tennessee and a fan of the Vols. He's an Atlanta native that didn't move to Nashville until after his junior year of high school and virtually spent one summer and one semester in the Volunteer State.
Much like Phillips and Amadi, we do believe this comes down to Tennessee and LSU despite Texas and Georgia receiving official visits as well. Martin is planning on taking officials to Tennessee on Jan. 23 and LSU on Jan. 30, but those dates may be interchangeable as we get closer to those two weekends.
Per Hubbs
I just don't see him ending up at LSU. What a slap in the face to our staff that would be..."hey Justin, here's a plan to get you into a JUCO early which will allow you to get back to a D1 school (specifically TN) with 4 years to play 3." "Awesome, coach! Thanks for all your help! I look forward to staying in contact with you."
"It's been a tough decision for me, but I have decided to take my talents to...LSU. Thanks to the TN coaches and university for all they did for me, to prepare me a plan to get to a D1 school this quickly after having to go the JUCO route. I sent them a thank you card on my OV at LSU and told them my intentions of being a Tiger. I hope it wasn't too much of a slap in the face to them."
What do people mean when they say we "placed" him there? Do we have a relationship with JuCo coaches that allows that recruit to waltz in and play.
I need to know if I will feel bad when I hurl obscenities at Martin if he goes to LSU.
-Rivals."Tennessee had asked me to silently commit, and I did silently commit but I didn't want to make it known at the time because I wanted to go through the recruiting process," Martin said on Friday. "As I started to look around, I started to like some other schools, so I told them that I wasn't silently committed but I was still interested."
"I told them that there's a chance I still end up at Tennessee, but I don't want them to count on me coming," Martin said "I just wanted to give them a heads up so they could have a backup plan in case I didn't go there."
Of course the biggest threat to Tennessee when it comes to landing Martin is an SEC foe. LSU has been a serious player in the process for some time. And according to Martin, the Tigers have now officially pulled into the lead.
"I like LSU and Tennessee both," Martin said. "I like LSU maybe a little bit more. That's been my school since I was growing up."
"I'll probably decide after my last visit," Martin said. "I think I'll do it on Signing Day. That's the week after I go on my last visit."
