'15 JUCO CB Justin Martin (UT Signee 2/4/15)

I didn't see an amazing play from him all year. Saw a raw athlete with a decent football IQ. Looked like a freshman with good raw ability. Hope he uses his tools well this upcoming year.

Raw athlete?
Nah... i would just say athlete.
Kid can play on both sides of the ball and multiple positions.

Moseley will be All SEC, with everyone throwing away from Sutton.

Martin or Gaulden will get that Nickel spot.

Martin is a raw athlete if you ask me.

Nothing raw about Martin. Elite as they come. He's got All-SEC written all over him.

Didn't one of the recruiting analyst say he played safety in HS? I think he's had one year at CB. I think he'll transition just fine though lol.

I know he played RB at Overton but I thought he played CB for them on defense, could be mistaken about that.

One of the better, more important recruits in this class IMO. He and Kamara are difference makers this next season at skill positions of need.

He's a better athlete than any of them. 5 star athlete easy.

Yup.

You can find 6'2"-3" CBs, and you can find sub-4.4 forty CBs. Neither are found in huge quantities, but top end universities don't have too much trouble finding them. You do not find 6'3" CBs that also run a sub-4.4 though. This guy is a freak and when you look at both LSU and Muschamp making this guy a priority as a JUCO... I'm getting a certain kinda feel.

And Chief continuing to push for him after the move to aTm says a lot imo.

This is why he will moonlight on offense.

He could be our missing deep threat.

I like the he's gonna get coached by Martinez- maybe the best DB coach in th SEC.

because while he is an Elite talent he is still RAW at that position. He should get plenty of reps though. Might start at Nickel.

I know a lot of fans expected Chris Weatherd to come in and immediately be an impact player, but I felt the same way about him as I do Martin. Both are guys w/ huge upsides but I don't think Martin will be SEC-ready this fall, at least not enough to be a reliable starter. Here's why:

1. With just 1 year of experience as a full-time CB, he's described as "raw" for good reason. As one assessment put it, "...his speed, recovery speed, and length are all basically elite attributes, but his instincts, tackling, and ball skills all leave something to be desired."

2. His ranking is based more on potential than production. He finished the year with 24 tackles and just 3 of NEO's 42 PBU;

3. He's not an EE so he'll miss spring practice;

4. JUCO guys typically don't make a big splash their 1st year.

All legitimate concerns...until he straps on his helmet. Also, Weatherd had some strong competition at every position they tried to play him at. Martin just has to beat out Moseley. Now, don't get me wrong, Moseley is not going to lay over for him either.

All valid points, but Weatherd didn't arrive on campus until the last minute either. Since it looks like Martin will be here this summer I just don't have the same concerns in regards to him being ready to go.

5. Moseley will have been in our system for one season and two offseasons and will probably be the higher floor/lower ceiling option of the two early in the season (in much the same way Michael Williams was early in 2014). And if our pas rush is as good as many of us are expecting next year, more than anything we'll need our CB2 just to stay in position and not blow any coverages or assignments.

We're gonna have to find ways to utilize Martin's athleticism though.

“i just did (defensive-back) drills (this spring), working out and stuff, making sure i’m in shape for when i come,” martin said. “i’m going to probably gain, like, 15 pounds or so. They said naturally i’m going to get bigger because of the weight program and the food and all that stuff. They haven’t told me a specific weight that they want me at.

“i ain’t going to lie. The weight room’s probably going to be a challenge for, like, the first week and a half. After that’s over, i’ll learn the plays pretty simply. After i finish being sore for about a week or so, i’ll be straight.”

“what i can say that i like about the (incoming) group so far: There ain’t no egos or nothing,” said martin, who plans to wear no. 8 at tennessee. “everybody is just cool with everybody. Everybody’s funny, happy and ready to go and excited about playing for tennessee.

“i mean, we signed two good classes. We had a pretty decent season last year, and we ended the season on a high note, blowing iowa out in the bowl game. I feel that momentum’s just going to keep rolling into this season, and we’re going to do something greater than we did last season.”
