Boom!

Johnson says he's going to take some visits with Nyheim Hines this summer. He also says he hopes to go to college with someone he already knows (ie Mook, Nyheim, etc), he knows he'll make new friends but he plans to go out of state and going with a friend you've known for awhile will make it more special.

Lawdy, lawdy!

Oh damn... If Sterling could bring Mook with him to UT that would be abso****inglutely amazing. I've liked Sterling at DT for us for a while, and Mook is about to explode. Dude is a stud.

Is it a foregone conclusion that this kid will play DT? I'd like to see him at 6'5" 285 playing DE.

Big strong NFL type DE holding down the strong side. Yes please.

Could be a Shaun Ellis type player.

We need speed at DE. Its just the way things are headed. Also most (not all) NFL teams run a 3-4 dont they? That usually calls for larger DEs.

I would love to see both size and speed at SDE. There are jumbo DE's still out there playing in 4-3 alignments.

Doesn't Sterling have good quickness?

Miss the days of our dominant d-lines that had both size and speed. The days of a Leonard Little on one side and a Shaun Ellis on the other side

No it's pretty much split. More and more teams are running multiple fronts though. Just off the top of my head:

4-3:
Seahawks
Broncos
Panthers

3-4:
Steelers
49ers
Packers

Multiple:
Falcons
Patriots
Texans (under new DC Romeo Crenell)

And this is implied "mostly". I would say all teams use "multiple fronts" at times but the teams listed under that category are more 50/50 while the Seahawks might be 80/20 between 4-3 and 3-4.

As others have mentioned jumbo DEs exist. Red Bryant is an example. Tyson Jackson for ATL will be both a 3-4 and 4-3 DE for us.

^this...outside of people like Dick LeBeau and Wade Phillips who will always run a 3-4, the new wave is what they call hybrid... its going to be multiple looks,fronts,schemes,etc... this is what most are going to...

Fortenberry just said Johnson is at the top of the DT list with several other guys like McKenzie, settle, dj jones, etc.

I think he is definitely a take

Hawks are definitely a multiple front team. Carroll called it "running a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel". They do some crazy stuff with their front 7. I once saw them successfully drop their NT playing the 0-tech into coverage on a TE. Interestingly enough the one time we did that last season with Corey Miller at the nose (not sure if he was lined up over center though) it completely confused Connor Shaw and ended up with him getting sacked from behind.

Eh from my view on their games, they are a 4-3 team with a LEO (7/9 tech) DE. That LEO can stand or be down on the line but he rushes a lot. Most consider that a 4-3 even though it's multi. True multi fronts switch out players. I see what you're saying though. They were more of a true 4-3 and each year they are moving more and more to multi front. However they do run a good amount of multiple fronts too and not just multiple fronts but multiple everything lol. They move S's to LB spots they move LBs to the line etc etc

Idk maybe I'm not watching enough Seattle games.

Yeah I mean I think we're essentially getting at the same thing with the multiple everything stuff. Their versatility in terms of personnel is just insane. Very rarely do you ever see Peyton get confused and shut down by a defense like they did.

Just like in college, spread offenses have pushed teams into nickel far more often than before, reducing the importance of the base D anyway.

285 is big even for NFL DEs unless we are talking about 3-4 DEs who are more like undersized 4-3 DTs IMO. That being said I think Johnson would be a DT all the way at UT. Would not be surprised if he was around 300+ by the time he got to UT.

I'd take McKenzie and Johnson and not give it a 2nd thought. Jones would be an impact guy sooner IMO, but I don't think we win that battle with the MS Juco handlers. I think Settle is a longshot.
