Getting passed up by two coaching staffs, if true, has got to be a powerful motivator.
It might be but announcing a commitment to one school on the same day he was turned down by his first choice makes it seem like he wanted a scholarship offer set in stone without having to prove himself in camp....almost like he doubts himself.
Clayton, NC (Cleveland) SSDE/Defensive Tackle Sterling Johnson committed to Clemson late Tuesday night after speaking with Head Coach Dabo Swinney. The 3-Star SSDE/Defensive Tackle chose Clemson over Tennessee and North Carolina. Johnson is 14th commitment for Clemson's 2015 class. The Tigers are still 4th in the 247 Team Rankings Johnson told Clemson247 "I spoke with Coach Dabo and we talked about what commitment to Clemson meant and I told him I'm a Clemson Tiger."
Johnson told Clemson247 "No disrespect to Tennessee's staff but the Clemson Coaching Staff is better. Every time I see Coach Venables and Coach Reed they have a smile on their face and enjoy what they do. It doesn't seem like a job to them. They're real down to earth. Coach Venables wants to use me like he did Gerald McCoy at Oklahoma."
Earlier in the day Johnson was going to commit to Tennessee. Johnson told Clemson247 "Tennessee told me they were only taking one Defensive Tackle and it would be the best one. They told me they wanted me to wait and come to camp so they could evaluate me more. They had never said that before. I felt like at that point Clemson was the best choice for my future." I asked Johnson if Clemson was a thought before he talked to Tennessee. Johnson "I've always liked Clemson and their staff. I'm glad I am a Tiger. I will be at the All In BBQ in June."
FWIW I wouldn't get too caught up in this "we're only taking one more DT" business. I don't think they're being dishonest but it sounds like recruit speak to me.
I think what he is saying is true...we have a silent commit or commits to fill up however many spots we are using at DT, and only have one spot left. We want to use it on who we have evaluated to be the best...come to camp and prove you are the best for that spot...he declines. Guess he doesn't have a lot of confidence in his own abilities.
Another quote made it sound like we only had one spot LEFT. That tells me we have at least one silent, cough, McKenzie, cough, and feel good about Settle and/or Jones.
Weird recruitment overall. As a Clemson fan, definitely took me off guard. Here's an interview and some insight from him last night after everything went down:
"To be completely honest, Tenn was my favorite leading up to Tuesday. Then they told me they weren't going to accept my commitment with the way their depth chart played out. They wanted me to come to camp with the other defensive tackles they've offered, then they'd take the best one."
"Honestly, that wasn't the part that bothered me. Spring ball has been over for a month now, and they knew that was their plan, but they waited till I asked for a commitment before they even said anything. That's what bothered me."
"The only reason Tenn was above Clemson was because I could intern at the SEC Network there. But then I thought about it, and I've even told this to recruits and the Tenn coaches when asked who I have the best relationship with; it's Clemson coaches.
"I thought about that and the family environment there. Both of my parents liked it there, and they're graduating six defensive linemen. So I said to myself, some people may question whether I'm just trying to get this over with, but I believe my heart is in Death Valley."
"I don't believe it was a coincidence I talked to Clemson the night before and Tenn ended up telling me they weren't going to take me. I felt like it was an act of god. He was telling me to make this right move."
