'15 NC DT Sterling Johnson

So are we recruiting this guy or not, we need DT.

Sounds to me like he is done with UT. Would not be surprised to see him take visits or consider other options as his commitment looks to have been kind of a rushed thing after he found out CBJ would not take him now. If he looks around, I doubt it's toward Knoxville.

Simple way to prevent this type of issue IMO. If your a recruit or the parents of a recruit always ask this question right after the offer comes.

"Would you take my commitment today"?

If the answer is no, that tells you all you need to know about the "offer". Your being "recruited" and it's not actually an offer for anything.

IMO it would help kids not end up in this situation.

Agreed. Recruits and their parents should be thorough in their information gathering. This happens all the time. There are a lot of very good players who are not takes at the moment due to others being higher on the board. Had he stuck with his original committment date he could have been a take. At this stage though, we have at least 3 guys higher on the board we are in excellent shape with. You can't really fault a staff or a recruit in this situation imo. It is what it is. If he truly wanted to be a Vol he could have came to camp and proven himself. It's pretty simple. I don't think we will see any problems due to bad publicity at all. All of this is judt part of the recruiting game. Nothing is ever a given...both sides have to prove themselves and players must earn a committable offer just like the coaches have to earn a commit's pledge. Goes both ways imo.

I agree with your sentiment, but apparently we've already "offered" scholarships to over 200 players this year for about 23 spots, and we obviously aren't going to fill up those spots on a first-come, first-serve basis. It seems like non-commitable "offers" are a necessary evil of modern recruiting, because no coach wants to be seen as showing interest too late. Unfortunately, this can lead to confusion and embarrassment for contingency plan prospects like Duke Shelley and Stering Johnson, who, in a perfect world, wouldn't be offered a scholarship in the first place.

I understand the reasoning behind all the offers. If I were a recruit being "offered" I would ask the question. The coach says yes, you know where you stand. He says no, you know where you stand. If the coach says "yes" and the recruit then waits and allows his recruitment to play out, that "yes" could change at any time. Had Johnson asked CBJ when offered, "would you take my commitment today", he may well avoided this whole situation.

Weird recruitment overall. As a Clemson fan, definitely took me off guard. Here's an interview and some insight from him last night after everything went down:

"To be completely honest, Tenn was my favorite leading up to Tuesday. Then they told me they weren't going to accept my commitment with the way their depth chart played out. They wanted me to come to camp with the other defensive tackles they've offered, then they'd take the best one."

"Honestly, that wasn't the part that bothered me. Spring ball has been over for a month now, and they knew that was their plan, but they waited till I asked for a commitment before they even said anything. That's what bothered me."

"The only reason Tenn was above Clemson was because I could intern at the SEC Network there. But then I thought about it, and I've even told this to recruits and the Tenn coaches when asked who I have the best relationship with; it's Clemson coaches.

"I thought about that and the family environment there. Both of my parents liked it there, and they're graduating six defensive linemen. So I said to myself, some people may question whether I'm just trying to get this over with, but I believe my heart is in Death Valley."

"I don't believe it was a coincidence I talked to Clemson the night before and Tenn ended up telling me they weren't going to take me. I felt like it was an act of god. He was telling me to make this right move."

God hates us?

Little g god hates UT. Big G God loves UT. Big difference.

IMO he should still camp at UT, just for the giggles of it....

LOL, but he had a looong, detailed conversation w/Swinney on the phone last night. I'm sure the gist of it was that he's forbidden to take any more visits to anyone else, or CU pulls his offer.

So, no UT camp.....

So after reading this thread..... you think the recruit should ask if his offer is committable? Its a little fuzzy still :)

Hoping this doesn't come back and bite us in the backside. Turning away 4 star DTs is generally not good for business.

Am I the only one who wasn't impressed by this guy's film? I was stunned he was rated so high by 247 go begin with.

On the contrary, turning away a 4* (who slid to 3*on some sights) is a good problem to have. We are in it for 2 5* DT's. We have move passed Dooley days and are now in it for top talent. Even if we miss Kahlil or Settle (I think we get both) we will not miss on both and there are plenty of DT's at Johnson's level if we still need one.

We had a good DLine haul in 2014 and we are in it for some highly rated 2016 guys already.

I think most all offers are committable at the time the offer is extended, but recruiting is such a fluid situation that it might not be the next day, week, or month. If you get the offer you really want, you better jump on that train before it leaves the station!

That's good insight. It makes sense, and I think you are probably right. Thanks!

His film looked impressive however it also appeared that people he was lining up against were 1/2 his size. Some have said he didn't impress in camp so one could assume that when faced with competition that was equally as big as him he did not impress.
