'15 TN ATH Jocquez Bruce (UT commit 6/17/14)

South-Doyle coach Clark Duncan said UT coach Butch Jones first broached the topic with Bruce midway through this past season, and followed up with the 6-foot, 170-pound running back/defensive back about doing it within the last month.

“The way I understand it, what they can’t do is a full-blown official visit, where UT pays for everything,” Duncan said. “Coach Jones can’t go into the home for a visit either. When Coach Jones and I talked about it, he wanted to make sure Joc knew he was heavily recruited and wanted, this was just another step toward building the program.”

So what was he signing in that pic he tweeted?
Just wondering since Bussey bailed, if that opened up a scholarship for him?

Cried when received offer-wants it.

This kid will kill himself trying to help his hometown team, and that's what it's all about. We got your back Bruuuuuuuuuuuce! 102,455 skrong!!!

Very excited to have Bruce. Welcome young man.

Bruce wont sign and will show up for fall camp. Basically after camp has started he will be a walk on. At that point he will be put on scholarship.

The way it works is that if he is put on scholarship at that point then he is counted for the 2015 class if there is room, if there is not room then because of the timing it can be future counted to the 2016 class.

Now the key is there is no guarentee. That being said if you do that with Tennessee recruits so publically then it will be near impossible to recruit going forward.

This is not telling a kid with time to go, this is telling him no after you already told him yes and he waited and everything.

Butch simply wont do that, and by having successful blueshirts it will make it a valid option moving forward.

Are you certain that a blue shirt would have to count towards either class limit? If Bruce is walking on and then he's put on scholarship, wouldn't that just count against the overall 85 limit? When Alex Ellis was awarded a scholarship, I don't think it counted towards either the '14 or '15 class, so why would it be different for a walk on who is given the scholarship at the beginning of fall semester?

I believe the rule states that if a walk-on player is placed on scholarship within his first two years he must be counted on either the last class if there is room or forward counted against the next class.

If it's within the first two years, it has to count against a class. Like with Swafford.

Edit: Yeah, what Glicht said.

Yes, Bruce will be an initial counter in '16. The difference with walk-ons like Ellis & Gilliam is that both had been around for over 2 years, so their scholarships count only against the 85 limit.

No, not really. In theory, you could continue to Blue Shirt 4-5 players every year, essentially counting forward in perpetuity.

I think that's a dangerous precedent to set though in case they ever close that loophole. Also blueshirt players typically are going to be lower rated and recruits that bring the quality of your class down some. I think we see a few blueshirt players going forward but Butch will start to dial that number back a lot IMO. Roster has been pretty much turned over and rebuilt at this point.

Once roster is back to championship depth, he will not have to do this with as many players. At this point he is trying to flip the roster as quickly as possible with as many players as possible. We couldn't afford small classes these past two classes. He might still do it with 1 maybe 2 local guys that he knows are all Vol and it would mean he can sign another 1 or 2 studs come signing day. It's nice to have that fall back fin case you miss on your top NSD target you can just turn around and give that immediate spot to your blueshirt. If you get your target then the kid is already willing to blueshirt.
