'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

Everybody has been saying that for a long time, but they just keep on winning state championships..

Just sayin...

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure if we (UT) played in the FCS, we'd be winning titles too. Apples and oranges, brother. Just as good players can come out of the FCS (Flacco, Colston, V. Jackson, Finnegan, etc.), good players can come from teams that play lesser high school competition.

Meske runs a hell of a program over there. I'm not trying to take anything at all away from Webb; I'm simply saying playing Donelson Christian, Ezell-Harding Christian, King's Academy, and the like week in and week out isn't exactly a juggernaut schedule.

Nathan's recruiting is picking up steam as evals start in mid April. Syracuse and Ga Tech showing serious interest. Had a great camp at NFTC in Charlotte.

Speed and acceleration made this Tennessee prospect the Nike SPARQ champion of the last few weeks, with a sub four second shuttle and sub 4.4 second 40-yard dash. While his burst and top-end speed, and getting to that point quickly, is his best asset, it's not the only one. Cottrell made considerable defenders miss on Saturday as both a runner and receiver

Ok well what about Maryville, Alcoa, and Fulton? I mean I think east TN football gets a bad rap because they were bad 10-15+ years ago.. Seem to be doing just fine now a days... Even against these "elite" middle and west TN teams.

While some have downplayed Cottrell's abilities due to the relatively weak football competition in East Tenn., I think it's important to note that West did play some pretty good teams last year. Here's how Cottrell fared against West's five toughest opponents (they played Cleveland twice):

* Maryville HS (9/6): 9 carries for 95 yards, 1 catch for 3 yards, 1 KO return for 30 yards
* Asheville HS (9/13): 18 carries for 207 yards & 3 TDs, 1 catch for 4 yards, 2 KO returns for 108 yards
* Cleveland HS (9/27): 12 carries for 88 yards
* Anderson Co. HS (11/22): 9 carries for 121 yards, 2 catches for 70 yards & 1 TD
* Cleveland HS (11/29): 5 carries for 106 yards & 2 TDs, 2 catches for 45 yards & 1 TD
* Henry Co. HS (12/6): 10 carries for 153 yards & 2 TDs, 1 KO return for 81 yards
* COMBINED: 63 carries for 770 yards (12.2 ypc) & 7 TDs, 6 receptions for 119 yards and 2 TDs, 4 KO returns for 219 yards

It's pretty remarkable that Cottrell rushed for over 1,900 yards last year even though he averaged under 9 carries per game. Out of his 131 carries for the season, 14 went for TDs of 60+ yards.

I would have no issue at all if he were signed as this years RB. The staff was quoted as saying they would ideally like a change of pace type scat back this class. I had thought that was what Scott brought to the table, but maybe not. When I look at the kids stats, his camp performances, and his attitude, I'd take him and roll with it. After signing 3 quality backs in the last class, IMO taking a bit of a risk here would not be a huge deal. I think the kid will be a player.

I agree. I think we need a change of pace guy out of this class rather its Cottrell or Griffin or the Scott kid. And with Young and Lane being Seniors seems like there is room. It does not hurt to stack them up...look at the past when Tennessee was killing it!

Late 80's: Cobb 6'1 212
Webb 5'9 197(change of pace guy)

Mid 90's:Stewart 6'1 224
Hayden 6'0 216
Garner 5'10 190(change of pace guy)

Late 90's-early 2000's: Lewis 5'11 232
Henry 5'9 220
Stephens 5'9 190(CPG)

I dont think anybody who knows UT football would argue with having a loaded backfield. I think we do right now but I say get as many as you can! Load that backfield up. Means good things for the Vols! One other note is that you could argue the smaller backs had better careers at UT and a bigge impact.

Garner- 7.3 yards a carry one year!
Webb- Unbelieveable games until he got hurt!
Stephens-Only one of those three to lead SEC in rushing!

This guy shouldn't be a take over Love, Griffin, Weber, Hines, Reid, or any other back we've offered. As far as I'm concerned he's a better Devrin Young.

Why didn't he get more carries?

Except bigger, stronger and faster than DY. And he can play on the other side of the ball.

We're in on better talent. He doesn't bring anything that our other RB recruits don't. He would've been a good get for Dooley.

Super intriguing kid. I want to see more of him but disagree with taking a risk. I don't see any reason to take a risk when we are in on so many great players. Butch knows best!

I haven't seen any of his highlights. Why are you so certain he's not as good? Just a question, not being argumentative.

Just seems like the Devrin Young situation. Showing out against Knoxville competition doesn't impress me that much. Devrin out up huge numbers playin a lot of the same teams as West does. I'm not saying he isn't a good player I just don't think he's SEC caliber. We needed Devrin to catch punts at the time so I was ok with that offer. I just don't see the justification for offering NC.

I'll point out the difference. He does not have 4*'s by his name. Oh, and he is of the lighter variety. Yup, that's about it. :p

If the kid does well this year and a recruiting service decides to rank him a 4*, you can bet the "we are in on better talent" talk will calm down.

Nah, I'd still take the 4* who plays in NC, MI, or UGA competition over him.

I just disagreed with your DY comparison. They're totally different players with different running styles.
