'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

As it should be at any high caliber school. Especially if you want to win in the SEC

Good thing LV isn't the coach. Whether the kid pans out or not, he would let every single kid he signed stay on the roster, and never sign a full class every year. :)

You love locals... And want to pass on kids like Phillips, Edoga, And Deberry... Word

Yes, I do love seeing instate kids wear the UT Orange and play for the Vols.

I did not say I would pass on any of the kids you mentioned. I mentioned their names in various threads as recruits we could lose out on while stockpiling talent at other positions. Phillips and DeBerry have been on my final class prediction for quite some time. Edoga has not been as I'm not sure (as of now) we could take more than Richmond along with Jones and Stewart. If Drew chose to go elsewhere, I would think Edoga is possible. Take no TE, maybe Edoga fits. There are various ways to make it work if the staff wants to. When people mention taking 2 QBs, 2 RBs, 3-4 WRs, 6 on the OL, obviously those spots have to come from somewhere. I would not trade Phillips or DeBerry for an extra QB & RB. That was my point all along.

Not every kid. Kids do screw up at times. They do choose to play elsewhere sometimes.

If I were a coach would I go into every year trying to see who all I can cut loose so I can sign a full class as a lot of fans would? No I would not. I would prefer to coach up the kids I made a commitment to and them making a commitment to play for me. If they are going to class, making the grades, being a team player, and doing things the right way, I would do my best to help them succeed at Tennessee. They did choose to be a VFL, not so much a Vtillyoucansignsomeonewithmorestars.

Throw in "I don't care if you can run a 3.2 40, you're white and ain't no way you're playing RB at UT" while you're at it.

Does anyone have an Ancestry.com account? Maybe if we did a little research we could find a way to raise his star rating.:crazy::crazy:

His color has nothing to do with it man. He's not an SEC caliber player why waste a scholly on a player. We aren't in a position to do that right now. We need players who are going to add depth we have enough guys on the team who aren't SEC quality.

Nike Football Combine, Pittsburgh, PA - Feb. 2010
Devrin Young: 5-6, 162
Results: 4.63 40, 4.03 shuttle, 34-0 PB, 33.2 VJ, 98.25 SPARQ

Young's rushing stats as a junior at Bearden: 222 carries for 1,455 yards (6.6 YPC) & 19 TDs (1 TD every 12 carries)

Nike SPARQ Combine, Atlanta, GA - Mar. 2014
Nathan Cottrell: 5-10.5, 178
Results: 4.35 40, 4.09 shuttle, 39-0 PB, 40.8 VJ, 132.72 SPARQ

Cottrell's rushing stats as a junior at West: 131 carries for 1,922 yards (14.7 YPC) & 22 TDs (1 TD every 6 carries)

Let's see...Cottrell is a bigger, faster, stronger, and more explosive athlete than Young, and during their junior years his per-carry season average was higher than Young's best single-game average, and he averaged at least 7 YPC in all 15 games while Young averaged under 7 YPC in 8 of his 12 games, and he scored TDs at twice the rate as Young.

But other than those things, I don't see much difference between the two. :)

The difference is man that Dooley was our coach and would sign anyone. You have to consider the competition he plays. Yeah he's bigger, faster, stronger, and more explosive than Young but is that really a good comparison? I ask you as good as Young was in high school who has he out ran in the SEC. The reality is that Cottrell plays in probably one of the weakest HS Football areas in the South East. While he had dominated his competition here in Knoxville it's not a great indicator of his talent level. There are players at the FCS level who run sub 40 yard dashes. Reminds me a lot of Cody Blac another east tn guy who we offered who doesn't contribute at all.

Cody Blanc Sparq: 2012, Central High School TN, 4.59, 4.5, 38, 33, 94.74

Nathan Cottrell recorded an event-high 132.72 SPARQ rating at the Atlanta Nike SPARQ Combine with an electronically timed 4.35 40, a 40.8-inch vertical and a 4.09-second shuttle

Blanc was taller and heavier. He averaged about 1/2 as many yards a carry in HS as Cottrell does.

Not really the same at all IMO.

Yes but Blanc dominated the competition in East TN went to a camp in Va Tech preformed well and has done little to nothing in college. What I am trying to point out is that East TN players always put up crazy number and show out at camp but when they get to the next level they disappear. I'm willing bet money that if Cottrell comes here he wouldn't be able to crack the 3 deep rotation at any position. He will be another D. Young, Blanc, and the other knoxville player who shouldn't be scholly players.

So you would never sign a kid from East Tennessee as their HS stats/camps mean nothing. Interesting take.

No I would be very cautious because those stats are a bit misleading. That's like you going to Knox College getting a 4.0 gpa and trying to convince people you are just as smart and talented as kind with a 3.5 from UT. There's a reason no other FBS level school has offered him.

You may be right on Cottrell but there hasn't been another player from East Tennessee to show out at a camp or put up Sparq numbers anywhere close to what Cottrell has. Sparq numbers alone don't mean he is automatically a D-1 prospect but it does show he is physically gifted and has the tools to develop. True enough Knoxville area produces few D-1 skill players but there have been a few and HS football in this area does seem to be getting better.

One of the weakest football areas in the southeast? Lol, u really don't know what you're talking about.. Check tssaa and see who's been winning these state championships. EastTN football has done a lot better than they get credit for.

Dude if East TN created such a large depth of talent then UT wouldn't have to leave their backyard. Check the football rosters of colleges around the southeast how many East TN guys do you see. You could take the BEST team out of east TN and let them play the best team out of a Upstate SC and they would get killed. East Tn hasn't done better than they are credit for you are just in denial. The reality is if they players are good then they would be getting signed and highly recruited.

It's bad. A few good teams and coaches don't make up for the whole area
