Sorry to quote from a while back, but I have a theory on this. It is just my guess, but I think the coaches will "take" just about anybody they have at least verbally extended an offer too, even if they have guys higher on the board they are in play with. I think when it's far from signing day they don't want to risk burning any unnecessary bridges. Say with Bailey Phillips... if they really weren't ready for his commitment and said no you can't commit right now then that might offend Miller and he decommit. But if you wait until after Miller has signed and even wait til say november/december next year and kind of maybe not call Phillips for a month or something and he kind of gets the picture, you don't have to create an unnecessary mess. Dropping them without really having to drop them I guess. Or also, over-recruiting a position can work too a la Kevin Mouhon. Maybe I'm completely off, but that's always been my guess.
They said no or at least not yet to a lot of kids who held UT offers. Sterling Johnson, Marquell Harrell, Duke Shelley, Torrance Gibson, and many others. IMO the staff takes commitments from kids they intend to sign come NSD. They pass on those they don't.
