'15 TN LB Josh Smith

Fiercely competitive, Josh Smith doesn't back down when challenged by some of the state's best, including his brother, Rashaan Gaulden, Josh Malone and others, during their training sessions with Nashville-based Playmakers Academy and In Full Motion.

"It's great; it gets me prepared for the season, long season, hard season," Smith said. "It's going to get me prepared in the long run, going against the best ones in Tennessee. When I get to the field, it's going to be almost easy repetition-wise."

Smith has heard a bit from both Tennessee and Vanderbilt and said he's enjoyed getting to know the Vols' coaches. He's also watched older brother accumulate offers, something not unnoticed at home.

"It's neat to see, but competitive-wise, it pushes me," he said. "Like I said before, I'm trying to one-up him every time. He's getting better and better every day. Hopefully I can get past him one day."

“It was a great visit,” said Smith, the younger brother of three-star junior safety Emmanuel Smith, who committed to Vanderbilt on Saturday. “I had fun, and it was topped off when the offer came. Couldn’t ask for more than that.”

“They like me, and they want me to get down there,” Smith said. “They want me to play at, like, inside, outside (linebacker).”

He said he was “very excited” to learn of his offer from Tennessee during the visit.

“I was surprised,” said the younger Smith, who sat out last season after suffering a torn medial collateral ligament. “I wasn’t expecting (my first two offers) to be that close together.”

“The atmosphere was great,” he said. “It was a lot of cheering and a lot of orange, most definitely.”

On his brother's commitment:

“He felt like (Vanderbilt was) home, but it’s kind of time for me to make my own decision,” the younger Smith said. “I’m going to wait on that.”

“I’m kind of a balanced linebacker,” said Smith, who claims to have been timed at 4.8 seconds in the 40-yard dash. “I can get in the pass drop. I can cover the run.”

“I’m probably going to visit Vandy and UT again,” Smith said. “April 13th, I’m going to see Kentucky’s spring game. I’m not sure about when I’ll try to make it back up there (to Tennessee), but I’ll most likely be back up there.”

From P Fort on twitter.

2015 LB Josh Smith says he's up to 215 now. One of the top players in the state for next year.

Recruiting this guy is going to be very interesting. He's Emmanuel Smith's brother, correct?

If they were any good Tennessee would get them both - I am hearing that we backed off both for Bigger Fish - Leave the Minnows for Vandy & MTSU - They are not SEC caliber......

I've heard Josh could be top ranked in the state, and Emmanuel just got bumped to 4 star. I was hoping Emmanuel would be a vol before the bump, still hoping we can get him to flip. I see a a lot of potential at LB

So I don't think the Smith bros are Minnows but what do I know.

Tennesse is looking at better athletes and higher character players - They are way over rated & I have heard they are very stiff and can not play at SEC level - Tennesse is competing with Alabama , Georgia & LSU for recruits no need to worry about bottom feeder Vandy....Butch knows talent and I trust him to find the best players & if he says they are minnows and moves on to Bigger Fish that is OK by me.....

I have heard that you are a dumbass and that this board would prefer to ignore your rambling nonsense and listen to those of higher intelligence

Is there seriously ANOTHER vandy fan posing as a UT fan?

Or perhaps they are all the same person just with multiple screen names, to further the facade that vandy has more fans?

“I liked working out with Coach Thig’,” Smith said, referring to Tennessee linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen. “It was a great experience. I learned some new things.”

“I talked a little bit to Coach Butch and just the rest of the staff,” said Josh Smith, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 244 overall prospect and No. 15 outside linebacker in the 2015 class. “They’re recruiting me hard. (They said) they really want me to come there and just stuff like that.

“I mean, I like to get to know the coaches, and I feel like I get to know them a lot more every time I visit and I feel more welcome every time I visit.”

“They said they like the way I move on the field and (that) I’m very versatile, and I need to work on my footwork a little bit — little things,”

But he said having a chance to continue playing with his brother in college will be a factor in his decision.

“My feeling is still the same,” said Smith, who also attended a camp at Vanderbilt on Friday. “I would like to play with him. I don’t have to, but it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make.”

“I haven’t visited any other places (recently),” he said. “I might take a visit to Kentucky on July 19th.”

He said that he is not sure when he will to visit UT again. And he has not other trips planned for the summer other than the potential visit to UK.
