Our most important states for recruiting, other than Tennessee of course, is GA, NC, and VA.

I think VA and NC are especially critical. Each have ample amounts of prospects and no traditional in-state power program. In many cases UT is the closest school that offers elite football(last decade notwithstanding). With no helpful hint towards how to do so, I would really like to see us establish a dominant recruiting footprint in both.

I liked this because you used "dominant" instead of "dominate." You are clearly a member of the VN 1%. :)

“I was hoping to get down to South Carolina and maybe head up to Michigan State, and definitely check Tennessee out again — get back down to Tennessee,” “On game day, it was great,” Taylor said. “You could really see the support that the Tennessee fan base had for the program, whether they’ve been doing well or not. It was awesome to see the atmosphere, playing in front of, like, 104,000 or 105,000 people in Neyland Stadium.”

“I’ve been staying on contact with Coach (Willie) Martinez, the (defensive backs) coach, kind of over Twitter. I’ve been in contact kind of regularly with Tennessee,” Taylor said. “They just told me how Tennessee was a real family atmosphere, how they play in the SEC, which is obviously the best football conference in the nation. Coach Jones was telling me how I’m the guy they want at corner, and they really could see me coming in and making an impact early, which was good to hear.”

“Also, I like Coach Jones a lot,” Taylor added. “He’s a real down-to-earth guy. He’s not going to pitch something that he doesn’t really mean, and he’s a truthful guy, so I really like Coach Jones, too.” “Hopefully I can get that list narrowed down pretty soon — probably the beginning or (middle) of spring — and then I can really take my time and visit those schools and take my officials during next season,” he said, “and probably, hopefully, at the end of football season next year or early winter is when I would want to make my decision.”

I know the teams pretty well here in Central Va as well as other parts of the state. So I think I have a good grasp on what players play top competition and who doesn't and I pegged it pretty good with the Derrick Green thing. UM was very disappointed in him and he even came in way over weight and they had to get him into playing shape. Curtis Grant OSU came from the same HS and never really panned out either. Never meant to sound as if I was talking trash about the kid I just never saw how he was the #1 RB in the nation and I was not the only one in the area that thought the same. I think competition has a lot to do with how these kids are looked at especially when people go crazy over a kids highlight tape when they are playing Sorry A$$ teams. I do know that Darvin Taylor is intrigued by the UT offer due to his major being Mass Comm. And I can assure yu that his tape is not full of garbage teams as his HS plays one of if not the toughest schedule in the state. 2 of their 4 loses were to eventual state champions and the other 2 losses were to state semifinalists. I really want the Lewis kid from Ocean Lakes...That kid is a stud and they play top competition as well.

Thanks for your insight on the VA kids! Keep it coming!

st. Christopher’s school, richmond, va.
247sports composite rating: Four stars (0.9573)

taylor has visited tennessee three times over the past two years and recently referred to the vols as one of at least a half-dozen teams standing out to him, along with stanford, south carolina, vanderbilt, virginia tech and michigan state. Taylor has expressed interest in attending a school known for its prestigious academics, and stanford appears to be at the top of his list. But he said he’s also high on tennessee.

So because Shelly was denied, does that make it certain that we get a top rated corner like this guy???

IMO we are in good shape now that we didn't accept Shelly's commitment

I think they're in good shape here but not accepting Shelley is likely more to do with Ugo Amadi, IMO. Similar size guys and one is instate. Ugo has said UT is his leader for awhile now, might even be a silent commit.

"I've been to campus a few times but I've only been once since coach Jones has been there and that was at a junior day last year," Taylor said. "I was up there for the Missouri game when it went into four overtimes and I also camped there."

"I've gotten that feel from both coaches and coach Jones," Taylor explained. "Definitely, when we sat down and talked they told me I was one of the guys they wanted at defensive back because I fit the bill in terms of being big and physical and long corners so they can start transitioning to playing man-to-man stuff. They are definitely coming after me hard."

"It's just a great school in terms of their football program and history. I've been down there on game day and I love the atmosphere and they've gotten new facilities. Their new indoor facility and weight room are awesome," Taylor said. "The relationship I have with coach Jones and coach Martinez is really good and something I've been developing for a really long time now. I really enjoy that. Also, the fact that they are in the SEC and everyone knows the SEC has the best football in the nation and it's going to stay like that for a while. The fact that I could come in there and play against topnotch competition week in and week out, that's something that interests me, too."

Says UT, Michigan, Michigan St, Stanford, and USCe are all sticking out. Wants to take all his visits and decide after his senior year.

Any defensive gurus out there care to explain the difference in what he's talking about compared to what we ran scheme-wise in 2013? Or is this just recruiting coach-speak?

Not really a defensive guru, but looking back at film from the games, we definitely had to have quite a bit of zone coverage. Especially with the safeties, our corners were so weak that we had to have zone help at all times from our safeties. Better corners allow more creative calls for the safeties.

We were forced to play zone because (outside of Sutton) we don't have the athletes to play man-to-man coverage in the SEC.

Not a guru, but if your corners have the ability to play man coverage you can do so much more. You can leave the CBs in man coverage and cheat the safety/safeties up to blitz, cover the slot, or support the run. You can do a lot more guessing and don't have to worry about the corners needing the safeties help. Just think of two Cam Suttons on the field at the same time. Then if you do leave the safety or safeties back and they are also good enough to cover a man alone, just imagine how tight that pass coverage would be.
