'15 VA CB Garrett Taylor

Regardless of talent he plays against, Rivals has him rated as the #1 player in VA. I guess that is saying something

Any defensive gurus out there care to explain the difference in what he's talking about compared to what we ran scheme-wise in 2013? Or is this just recruiting coach-speak?

We ran a lot of cover 2 last year which is supposed to be safer than man and also takes the stress of off your corners. Basically your corners and lbs drop about 10 years and just form a line across the field while ur two safeties grab anything that goes past that. And yes man to man creates many more blitzing and creativity options.

That ten yards they drop tho, can be deadly when your line never sets the edge and your lb's are too slow to make it outside.

Cover 2 has a lot of flaws but it can be good situationally. It is bad vs the run, it gives free short passes and requires players to swarm and tackle in space, and also it is tough on safeties to pick up the routes. You might remember last year Alabama at home that play where Bama had a wide open reciever just standing in the Corner of the end zone? That was cover two. They had one wr run a post route and another run a fly and the safety got caught in the middle. It is really best used to mix up defenses and catch your opponent off guard vs slants, drags, and curl routes.

You lost me at cover 2 is bad vs the run. The coverage you're in has nothing to do with run support because the defense never even gets into any sort of coverage on run plays. You see run and you react to it instead of dropping into coverage. Unless the d is only leaving 7 men in the box, if so then I definitely see where you're coming from. Maybe if you said nickel or dime is bad vs the run but not a coverage.

Also, cover 2 is somewhat designed to stop the short passes. The corners are playing a short zone over the outside receivers, unless 2 receivers go deep in which case it's the corners job to cover one of them and the safety the other. And the LBs are coving short zone areas as well, expect for the MLB who is supposed to take a deeper drop. The main weakness of the cover 2 (coverage wise) is the deep middle zone. Say you send a WR on a 9 route and the TE on a 9 or 8 it puts a lot of pressure on the safety who naturally is going to play towards the receiver leaving an open zone for the TE.

Playing zone actually helps against the secondary against the run, since they will be looking toward the play rather than their man. Front 7 always plays run first no matter the coverage, unless it's 3rd or 4th and really long. So I agree with you that the called coverage doesn't have anything to do with how you react with the run.

clemson, kentucky, lsu, miami, michigan, michigan state, south carolina, stanford, tennessee and others have already offered the four-star recruit, but he's still hoping at add an offer from the fighting irish.
"notre dame would definitely move into my top five with an offer," taylor said. "it has everything that i'm looking for. I want a school with a high academic curriculum and environment, as well as a strong football environment. Notre dame has that and with an offer, i'd definitely take a strong look at them.

....

"stanford definitely stood out early in the process," noted taylor. "i didn't really have all the offers i wanted at the time, but now things have changed a little and i wouldn't have them on top anymore. I'm pretty open now. I've taken a step back and i'm evaluating everyone equally. I wouldn't say i have a leader right now."
although he doesn't have stanford on top, the cardinal will be tough to beat. Taylor and his parents first visited palo alto, calif., this summer and were blown away.

In NO WAY is this kid the #1 player in Va! LOL! I know you guys are gonna go off on me but I know whats out there and he is in no way the #1 guy in the state. He is a Private School kid and the private schools here are weak. I would take a number of kids before I took this kid. He might be a good camp kid but I'd love to see him play with the big boys in Central Va. Like Bird, Hermitage and Varina. In no way is he seeing WR's that compare to what those schools have.

Cool story? I'm not sure but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're not a fan? Taylor's definitely a big-time prospect...hate to burst your bubble.

Well I'm not sure I agree with his full synopsis, but he was right on Derrick Green when most were wrong

True...but I think he's way wrong here. Regardless of competition, you know talent when you see it. I see it...jmo. And I'm not saying he's the best in VA either...but he's top 2-3 iyam

I was on the Derrick Green bandwagon (without seeing his film, i guess just because he was the "#1 RB"...... Then my son and I watched the all star game he was in. My son was 10 at the time and even he was asking me why DG was supposed to be a bigtime RB.

Now Derrick Henry on the other hand.......

I never said the kid was not talented or no good. I said there is no way he is the #1 player in Va. There are a few guys that we are in on that I think are better from Va. The Simmons kid LB from Ocean lakes is good. And you know what kind of players they have @ Ocean Lakes. Ever heard of Justin Hunter? If I were CBJ and crew I would become best friends with their HC. They put 5 kids in the NFL in one draft last year. I would say the Settle kid (DT) and the Sweat kid are in my top including Simmons. Taylor might be in my top 8 but in no way is he #1 in Va. Good luck to the kid.

What about position wise? Who are some other kids in the secondary from that area that are talented? Seems like he is the most talented DB this year, or among them at least.

I rarely agree with the approach to your posts, but always listen, wait, and see.

So far. You were door on with Green, unless he blooms late. You loved Mizzel in that class. How did he do last year? Serious question

Rolled his ankle pretty bad early in the season, Oregon game I believe, and didn't really get a ton of playing time for most of the season. Not sure how his stats ended up looking but he never really got a chance to get going.
