Talked to Ricky DeBerry earlier this evening...
He said he was mainly in Knoxville to support 2017 quarterback Alex Faniel as he camped at Tennessee this weekend. He said he's taken the rising sophomore under his wing and is going on his visits with him because Faniel asked him to and he really sees that as an opportunity to give back and mentor a young guy because so many have poured into his life and he wants to pay it forward.
It was just a cool conversation to hear about DeBerry and that part of it. He said there wasn't a lot of recruiting going on. He said he talked to the coaches when he got there and that was good as it always is.
He plans to continue to take trips this summer as he hopes to narrow his 20 down to 7 or 8. He did say UVA and Virginia Tech will be in that final group because they are the instate schools and he will likely use unofficial visits this fall to see them. He plans to take all five officials and then go from there.
"I still have my top group, but I'm just waiting to take some more visits before I narrow my list down again. More than likely (Alabama) will definitely be in there, but I want to take two more visits. I'm pretty sure they're going to be in there."
A few more visits are on tap for this summer, including a potential trip to Tennessee this weekend
"Right now, I know my dad wants to visit Tennessee this weekend. I know that we're going to visit Miami, Penn State Texas A&M, Arizona State, and UCLA.

"It was fun to chill was some of my boys," DeBerry said. "Cam Ordway and Big Charles Mosley. Every time I come up here they treat me like family. It's always good to be here. I brought my whole family with me, my cousin, my mom, my siblings, and my grandma. They all wanted to see Tennessee so I brought them all with me and I have a great time when I'm here."
"Pretty much it's who I have the best relationships with, where I feel at home and who I'm most comfortable being around for four years," DeBerry said. I know my mom and dad are trying to go on as many trips as possible with me to see what's a good fit for me. Also, who stays in contact with me throughout the whole recruiting process. Sometimes coaches don't hit you up they way they are supposed to and then you have some coaches hit you up pretty much everyday. I know it's a business. Who stays in contact with me the most and who I have the best relationship with is what I'm looking for.
"People say that (Alabama and Tennessee battle). I still have a lot of schools that I want to get to. I haven't really named any leaders. I have been to both schools and both are really great schools. There are a few more schools I want to get to before I make any kind of decisions."
"How they are just one big family. They are definitely trying to get Tennessee back to where they used to be," DeBerry said. "Like they say brick by brick, one piece at a time. They really want be to be another piece to the puzzle to help them win a national championship and bring Tennessee back to where they used to be. It's all about relationships and it's not always about football. It's about what you do after football is over with. That's something they really sell and that's something that I like."
