'16 AZ DE Jonathan Kongbo UT Signee 2/3/16

Taylor will play some, imo.

I agree with this. At times it will be hard to get him on the field this year. I think we have to remember if we have a good year that Barnett, Vereen, Lewis, and Kongbo could all be gone.

Phillips, Taylor, Butcher, and others become super important at that point.

I remember Butch's first year when we went to Eugene Oregon. Now our team would destroy them, imo :).

I wouldn't want to play any Marcus Mariota-led Oregon team again, but in their current state...yeah, I think the Vols would handle the Ducks.

There are teams that rotate alot of linemen. I hope we become one of those. Make our guys fresh for the fourth quarter. As close as we play people, the fourth quarter is really important and that isn't coach speak.

I think our speed on defense would match up well with theirs. Ever since Butch has been here we keep getting more athletic, physical and faster. I like our chances with anyone.

Hugh postures as an African speaking Swahili and pounding on a djembe while citing prayers he's got no business saying. And Butch has his guys tell him to follow his heart,

Who's the looney one in this scenario?

Exactly and they call butch a snake oil salesman. Get real. Too funny.

3rd and Long

Kongbo, Barnett, Phillips, Vereen

Seriously, this is a nightmare for defenses with those 4 in there.

Also, you have to use some rotation with the d ends.

Obvious passing downs are going to be a nightmare.

In a true 3rd & long, obvious passing-down situation, I think a combination of Derek Barnett, Kyle Phillips, Darrell Taylor, and Jonathan Kongbo/Corey Vereen would be the ideal pass-rushing personnel. LaTroy Lewis has certainly earned some reps as well.

Either way, I agree with your assessment. Nothing should come easy for opposing offenses. Passing downs SHOULD be a nightmare for the Vols' opponents. The days of playing scared/too conservative & consistently failing to stop offenses in crucial situations is OVER. Hopefully. No more rushing 3 with a LB spying the QB on 4th & 14 hopefully. I believe Shoop is aggressive & confident enough in his players to get things done with the talented weapons he has been given.

Hugh show's up,

"Hey fellas, I brought my prayer candles that I bring with me everywhere. Do you have a Djembe so we can open up with a word of prayer?"

Perfect game day sign.

Can certainly see Taylor in there as one of those guys. They will absolutely fit Shoops aggressive style

You're right Lewis keeps getting better. We just have solid players everywhere. Teams will fear us this year.

How likely do you think it is in those 3rd and long situations, that Shoop deploys some sort of "Nascar" package?

Where he slides Barnett and Phillips inside, and lets loose Taylor and Kongbo/Vereen off the edges?

I'd love to see that.

Some interesting notes:
-He said before this weekend he thought he was going to FSU but it didn't feel right
-Kind of laughed off the Ole Miss rumors
-Chose Tennessee because it felt right and we believed in him and were his first offer and believed in him before the stars and hype. Also believes in Butch and his vision and believes we will compete for championships
-Kongbo admitted to struggling at school, but said he uses his resources to his advantage

Side note: The head football coach at AWC is really impressive. Stressed academics and getting kids to big 4 year universities. Kongbo and Luafatusaga (who spurned OM for Utah early on NSD) were 2 of a handful of d1 kids on this team and they had multiple other FBS kids including Clifton Garrett going to UAB.

It's funny that ole miss of all teams is complaining about wasting time and resources on a top guy just for a team to take them in a "questionable" way.

In fairness to OM, they probably are used to just wiring the money. That is probably tougher when you have to get money into another country.

THE NEXT BEST BIG DOG:

JUCO freak defensive end Jonathan Kongbo was expected to be embroiled in drama on Signing Day with his father wanting Ole Miss and Jonathan first preferring Tennessee and then FSU. But that drama, almost played out longer, came to an abrupt end in the early afternoon when a letter came through to the Vols. Kongbo is much more raw than Gary at this stage even though he’s older but he just started playing football his senior year of high school and is just scratching the surface of his potential. Gary is more of a sure thing,

DE Jonathan Kongbo – Tennessee – He doesn’t know what he’s doing just yet but he’s too big and athletic to stay off the field and once he gets into a groove he will be hard to stop, especially with those defensive tackles and having Derek Barnett to teach him.

SEC - TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

DE Jonathan Kongbo, Yuma (Ariz.) Arizona Western

Recruitment overview: The five-star defensive end signed with Tennessee on Wednesday to cap a wild recruitment that included a previous commitment to the Volunteers and a handful of official visits. Kongbo, the No. 1 prospect in the JUCO100 rankings, also had Alabama, Florida State, Ole Miss and USC among his finalists, though the Rebels posed the biggest threat to the Vols in the final moments.

Impact potential: Butch Jones made sure to point out that his staff expects Kongbo to be a star at the SEC level from the start. The former Wyoming player shows a great burst off the snap and is downright relentless in pursuit, and he possesses a deep arsenal of pass-rushing moves. It would difficult to find another junior college player with a better motor and that freakish ability off the edge should make Kongbo a force.
