'16 FL WR Brandon Johnson (UT commit 9/2/15)

Have to agree with sanddune on this one...with the quality WR prospects we are still seemingly in on this commitment is a bit lackluster.

I guess you thought the same thing about E Moseley too.
What to say that this staff want cut him lose before signing day. They have done it before.

You bet. Just like every single person on this forum when we flipped the 2* from Charlotte.

Is that supposed to be a positive or negative?

Booth was a 4* on some sites as well. He's a solid possession receiver, can probably play both outside and slot. Is he good? Yes. Is he Callaway, Davis, or Hardman? No. Now Bartow gets paid to scout and he is a big fan, so hopefully he has a big senior year. I'm not ecstatic like I would be for the aforementioned three, but I do like him as a solid possession receiver.

The staff has a system, and a recruiting profile. It's not only camp performances but also high character kids. Johnson graded high enough for them to offer last year and now he's a Vol. The days of Fulmer Cup are gone. This can be a DaRick Rogers vs a Marcus North. Both exceptional WR's, but there's a distinct difference that CBJ is looking for in a recruit.

Via Fingers in the FF

That is exactly what I came ITT to tell everyone.

Johnson was the #2 overall WR at LSU camp, above some higher rated guys. He made plays for two days straight on some of the best DBs in the south. LSU wanted him very badly and Miami did as well.

Very crisp route runner, very consistent and can get behind a secondary in a hurry. He's underrated and I'd have said that even if he would have picked Miami.

Bad news is I think this tells us where we are with Kyle Davis.

Former MLB star signs off on son’s decision to play football in SEC | College recruiting blog

“Basically, he really enjoyed Tennessee as far as the atmosphere, the people,” his father told the AJC. “(Head coach Butch Jones) was a class act. (Receivers coach Zach Azzanni), who really recruited him hard, did a great job. Being a receiver, it’s not a bad place to go knowing they pass the ball in their offense, so, he made that decision.”

“Georgia kind of came on as of late,” his father said. “It wasn’t like Georgia was recruiting him a year ago. They came on just recently.”
Unlike the Bulldogs and the other two programs, the Volunteers have consistently recruited Johnson for quite some time, his father says. Ultimately, that gave Tennessee the edge.
“He’s locked in at Tennessee,” his father said. “That’s where he’s going to go. I don’t see anything changing.”

Nothing to do with Davis. Callahan said Johnson was high on TN board. Barton also saw him in person at LSU camp and said he was arguably the best WR there in a very good group.

Kid is a 4 star on 247 and ESPN. That leaves one main sight in Rivals with him as a 3 star. amazing that there are people acting like this wasn't a good pickup.

the staff thinks Swain goes to Florida. Mecole is a long shot. That leaves plenty of room for 2 of Callaway/Davis/Victor

Know little about this kid but his father was one of the best catchers I've ever seen. They told stories about how he started training to be a catcher around T-ball aged.

His father would throw short hops into the ground as hard as he could to teach him how to block wild pitches. He comes from good genes. If his father passed his toughness off to this kid then UT has a good one.

His uncle is OchoCinco. Kid has the competitive bloodlines. It's one of the reasons 247 gives for thee 4 star. Barton said at LSU camp this kid was constantly competing and wanting to dominate every rep. He said he is a kid you put in any sport and he is a star and they love those type of kids

Don't know how I didn't make the connection when it was mentioned that his dad was a MLB catcher. Charles Johnson was a beast! Such a great defensive player with that gun! A step below Pudge Rodriguez because of his bat, but a big part of the World Series Marlins iirc.

SIAP

His father, Charles, caught ten seasons in the MLB as a two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner. His cousin is the eccentric former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson, who made six Pro Bowls and hauled in 10,783 total receiving yards in his 10 illustrious seasons as a professional football player.

“He’s a really overall smooth athlete,” Florida recruiting analyst Corey Bender told InsideTennessee. “He runs crisp routes, doesn’t really round off his routes too often. He’s just a good overall athlete with good size. He catches the ball away from his body. He’s a guy who doesn’t use his body too much to catch passes. He has good ball skills.”

“He’s a long strider who can really stretch the field and can do significant damage after the catch,” Bender said. “He picks up a lot of yards in a hurry, too. He picks up like a deer. Once he gets going, he really gets to top speed and he’s faster than what people think.”

yeh spends alot of time here.

At times, it seems you are more negative toward things UT than HG is. He has given praise in the past and in this case, he has an opinion that is not positive in this guy. Bartow loves him. Time will tell but this staff has earned the benefit of the doubt with their overall results in recruiting and recognizing talent. That is my opinion.

Quotes right after the LSU camp.

Scout:

Quote:
---There weren't too many top receivers today, but Brandon Johnson from S. Florida was one of the best. He was a top performer at June's camp as well and already has an offer from LSU. He's lean but can run good routes and has great speed in and out of the breaks as well. He's definitely a name to watch as LSU looks to add a third (and maybe fourth) receiver in this class

Rivals:
Quote:
Performance: It seems like this guy made plays every time you looked up. He has good size at 6-foot-2, but in this group he's not the biggest. However, he was able to get the best of a strong defensive back group for most of the past two days. He has been sure-handed and created separation with his crisp route running. It was a very consistent performance for the Florida standout.

My thoughts are the kid is super quick but not really straightline fast. He has shown some struggles at camps making catches in traffic. I wouldn't have thought we would take his commitment this early but he is a huge upgrade over Banks. He's not on the level of Hardman, Callaway, or Davis IMO but he's a good player. All of that's my opinion, I'll trust the staff given their success evaluating the position.

He doesn't seem to have a lot of stats. That's the one thing that has me curious
