Agreed...and that's really more of a testament to just how great Berry is. Dale Carter was amazing, but EB just took the safety position to a whole new level IMO.

That was what made Dale Carter so amazing. He could play safety and deliver big hits, return kicks, and then went on to a pro bowel career as a cornerback.

Berry was a great safety, but Carter was more athletic and able to play multiple positions. Those who discredit carter, never saw him play or were too young to understand his value.

I will never forget how Carter almost single handedly turned big games around with one play-the Florida game kick off return stands out the most.

I'm in no way discrediting Carter lol. I saw the man play. EB hasn't played multiple positions? Come on man. Both are outstanding players.

Berry could've gone first round as a CB as well. All of the scouts said it as well. You forget they wouldn't allow Berry to return kicks. The one he did he almost broke it on his first touch. You are caught up in your own era as well my good man. The play of Berry blasting Tebow head on was one that really stands out. People forget he picked 6 Tebow playing CB his freshman year.

You cannot go wrong with either EB or Carter. For me, it is a testament to the strength of the UT program that there can be a legitimate debate about who was the best safety to play for the Vols between two all-time great UT, SEC, college, and NFL players in EB and Carter. Carter played slightly before I was really following college football as a kid and EB played when I was in law school at UT. So, EB will always have a special place in my heart, but Carter was similarly electric.

Nigel Warrior is a baller. Hope he becomes a Vol.

That was my lame attempt at ending this pointless argument.

Agreed.

Eric Berry was nothing short of Tremendous. An all time great Volunteer.

I do feel however that there are some on here that only saw EB play, and may only know the "name" Dale Carter.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But these unequivocal statements that EB was hands down better than Carter are a little off base.

Dale Carter was a bad, bad man. :)
I would be one of those. I asked my dad actually what he thought about it, he said it's 1a and 1b. Didn't say which one was 1a though. Did say he liked how good Berry was in run support and how he wasn't afraid to hit, but said Carter was great in coverage.

That is incorrect. Eric was a safety of the way. he does not have the hips or quickness to play cornerback at the next level. That is not taking anything away from EB. He is a great safety.

Sherman gets away with it. Berry easily has Revis/Charles Woodson level hips. Agib Talib isn't more athletic than Berry either. The only really true fluid top CB is Haden. Peterson is fluid but also uses his athleticism to cover up certain areas too. He went top 5 for a reason. He was just that good.

The scouts said that Berry was too thick and did not have the hips to be a first round pick as a cornerback.

The scouts were right, as Berry is a damn fine safety. I always believe ed that carter would have been a batter safety in the NFL than he was as a cornerback.

We have had some great DBs at UT over the years.

Dang it turned into an old miller lite commercial in here. "Tastes Great!" "Less Filling!" Has Bob Uecker chimed in yet? Seriously though, Berry and Carter were both awesome, and I know I put my opinion on here days ago, but this is the Nigel Warrior thread and I would like to read/ discuss more about him. ---( Can a thread be started for discussion on who the best player was, at different positions, in UT's history? I would be interested in that, just not here). GO VOLS :hi:

And the fact that Deon Grant is third on a different level is crazy, too. He was an All-American and on a national title team. I was at UT during that time, and he was a great athlete and made some spectacular plays. The 98 UF INT comes to mind. He also had a pick 6 on the first play from scrimmage against Auburn in 99.

Ehh, there have been much worse arguments break out in player's threads. And for the record, I don't see this as an argument per se, I see it as more of a "discussion".

Also, I believe this discussion to be germane to the thread topic, which is Nigel Warrior.

We are discussing 2 former great UT safeties, whom both hailed from the state of Georgia. Nigel Warrior is hopefully a future great UT safety that hails from Georgia. Not to mention, one of the safeties is his father.

If Nigel reads his thread, I would imagine he doesn't mind to much seeing people discuss who was more badass in the annals of Tennessee Football History; his Father or Eric Berry.

:)

I'm sure he thinks his father is the best. I don't mind the discussion, just think it's more appropriate in the football talk thread. :hi:

Two time all-American at CB and KR.

He was before my time but I've seen highlights of him and he was ELECTRIC with the ball in his hands. I think he led the country in kick return yards both years he was here and won the Thorpe award his senior year.

He returned the 2nd half kickoff for a TD against Florida and opened the floodgates. We ended up beating them 45-3.

I dunno how EB would do at CB, but as a jr at UT he basically played LB at the line of scrimmage on some downs. He does the same for the Chiefs. Doubt Carter could have done that.

It's not against the law to think both players are two of the best DBs to set foot in this school or conference. You will just talk in circles trying to compare the two. Its like comparing Lebron and Kobe to Mj.

Except that you can't really debate that MJ is the greatest.

Dale Carter and Eric Berry had no weaknesses nor were they morons but Morans in the purest sense of the word.
