'16 GA DE Chidi Okonya (FORMER UT commit 5/15/15)

This was a Tennessee decision. We weren't real impressed with his senior film is basically what Hubbs said.

With an offer list like he has, it's hard to believe we cut him loose. But I guess it happens

I wish him well, but I don't have any problem saying that Okonya was one of the commits I viewed as expendable. Kid has some tools and serious upside. But Kongbo is just a better player and prospect, and we're in on a few other high school DEs that I like more as well.

Good luck to the kid.

Wonder if Hubbs was indicating something when he said this:

Many of his offers were not committable, he was intriguing in the sense that he is almost 6'7 and is a very good kid and student. But he's not super athletic and played stiff at times, plus he was only in the 225 range and would not see the field for a few years. During this season you wondered as he had blah stats and his team was only .500

It will be tough to hold on to Kongbo, but Thomas and Smith are both stud DEs also - and we have a great shot at both

Now those dozens of "concerned about recruiting" threads, dating back till June can gird up their loins like men.

You're about to see how Butch runs this.

Yeah, Derrick Brown and Jordan Bonner.

Remember Marques Ford decommitting? That turned into Kyle Phillips.

Isn't that a low-rated JuCo? I highly doubt we take another JuCO end after Kongbo.

This is more than likely about Thomas or Smith.

Marques Ford had a nice offer list too, he only ended up going to Rutgers though. Although in his defense most schools probably already had their classes full when we cut him.

I'm pretty sure I remember this pretty much being the case. Some schools like Florida tried to get in on him, but it was late in the game and Rutgers was the only other school he'd really had any contact with and/or felt comfortable with at the time.

If we'd picked up Phillips in December, I think Ford would have wound up at a better school.

His statement sounds similar to Marshall's.

"The University of Tennessee is one that conducts business in the business world of college football, and in compliance I have decided to make a business decision for myself and for my future," Okonya wrote. "I feel as though I have the option and duty to select the best possible insurance for myself and future."

Yes I agree and I felt for him for that. Winning>Class for me but that one really made me feel for him.
