'16 GA DE Mykelle McDaniel (UT signee 7/23/2016)

Why is that such a lol? Just stay at 85 and build your classes. I don't see the issue. That is the way it used to be.

Imagine a new coach being hired like Butch was. Needs to flip the roster, but has no class signing limits.

He proceeds to give 44 kids on the roster their walking papers plus there were 15 SRs.

He's signing 59-60 kids in this class. And there are a bunch of New coaches hired throughout the NCAA and a lot of them have the same plan.

It would be a disaster.

Didn't Butch save a spot for the OL from Morgan County (I think Morgan County) who's mom passed away who decided this spring to give up football?

Why? And no one would sign that many in one year. They would spread that out over a couple of years. 40-45 over a couple of years would be better than 60 in a class.

Butch took what 31 or 32 in a class? Ya think he would have took more if he could have? I do.

The system is in a good spot right now and it's better than it was in the past, IMO. Penalties for oversigning are now in place. Backcounting is there to help with schools who are rebuilding or planing ahead. SEC has it's own limit. Most schools operate under an annual scholarship plan meaning the coach ultimately has the authority to renew or to not renew the student athletes scholarship. So without the limit on class size you'd be looking at some ugly scenarios, like a coach signing 40 only to renew 25 of the scholarships after a year. This is why the Houston Nutt rule happened and the SEC put a limit on counters for each class.

My point is Nutt was the only one really. Think of how a coach would look if he did something drastic? The negative media of today would destroy him and no one would want to go there.

What? No. This is still going on today just not to such a great extent

Saban...Miles...Spurrier...are all guilty of oversinging before Nutt took it too far...Saban is one of the worst perpetrators too especially when it comes to grayshirting, sudden medical scholarships or booting kids off the team. Go back to his original Alabama signing class and I think you'll see what I mean. He signed like 32 I think? Of course he couldn't fit them all in, so that's when he got creative. Several medical scholarhips were issued, couple players mysteriously booted off team....Saban is a master at purging his roster.

Nutt gets all the attention from the ordeal, but in reality it should've been called the Nick Saban rule cause there is no one as crafty as Saban when it comes to oversigning.
