DT Derrick Brown, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier

Latest: Despite being one of the Southeast’s most sought-after prospects, Brown has tried his hardest to keep a low profile during the dead period. On Monday he said he remains focused on a group of five schools, Alabama, Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee. He already has officials in the books to the Tide and the Mississippi State and will visit the remaining three once the dead period ends later this month. Most assume Georgia is still the likely destination, but Alabama has made a move since landing Jeremy Pruitt, while Tennessee and Mississippi State are also real factors.

In his words: “I talk to Tennessee every day. I talk to four or five different coaches on the staff, including coach Jones, they’re all recruiting me. I love the Tennessee coaching staff.”

Prediction: Tennessee. Brown is very tough to read but the Vols seem to have real momentum and getting the last official visit is huge.

I'm really not trying to be negative, so please don't take it that way. But isn't Woody generally considered the village idiot on here? Or am I thinking of someone different?

He's more or less considered slow to admit the Vols are leading for a prospect. Him predicting Brown to us tells me we have a decent lead here.

On evaluations, absolutely.

Yes that's what I recall, poor evaluations, nothing concrete on whether he hates Tennessee or not. During my time on rivals I remember him flaunting his superior math acumen and acting all defensive about ratings rather than simply giving a candid analysis.

If we land this kid, we'll have the best d-line in the country next year. We'll have 3 5* DTs, 2 5* DEs, and Derek Barnett. Yikes.

DE rotation: Derek Barnett, Kyle Phillips, Jonathan Kongbo, Darrell Taylor, Austin Smith, LaTroy Lewis, and Corey Vereen.

DT rotation: Shy Tuttle, Kahlil McKenzie, Derrick Brown, Alexis Johnson, and Kendall Vickers.

That's 12 SEC/NFL caliber defensive lineman we'll be able to rotate. Guys stay fresh all game. Defense dominates all game.

Stellar d-line depth is what's allowed Alabama to be as successful as they've been. We seem to be now approaching that level of depth as well.

DB always has a seemingly genuine enthusiasm in his voice when he speaks about TN whereas a lot of other guys say nice things in a more common generic monotone. So, we've got that going for us, which is nice.

Danny O'Brien will probably be in the top 4 rotation as long as he's still around as well. He doesn't have the size and athleticism of most of those other guys (except maybe Vickers), but maybe he can have one of those 5th year senior productivity spikes that are so fun to watch sometimes.

He was already relegated to #5 this year in big games. Shy and Kahlil got more snaps in our big games. I think Alexis and Brown push him even further down the depth chart.

He'll get ceremonial snaps in games against the weaker teams like Mack Crowder did this year. But you won't see O'Brien getting much run against the Alabama's of the world.

Danny o brien will be a SR and wanting to play too

He was closer to #3 for much of the year. He got a lot of snaps in the bowl game. I hope our more physically talented guys can outplay him and relegate him to a crowded like role, but we've seen how much the defensive staff values experience before.

O'Brien's poor decision making affected his number of snaps more than his ability. He'll definitely contribute in the future. Will start next year, if I were a betting man.
