There's a bit more to the story than him just punching a woman on the ground.

I have heard some of the bit more, but the last part of your sentence still says it all. He punched a woman on the ground. That, to me, is a violent, unnecessary, character-indicative act and I see no possible excuse for it. I realize that I am judging him but punching a woman on the ground appears very bad to me, regardless of the circumstances.

I agree in that what he did was wrong, but if this woman was violent with his mother I could see why in a fit of rage he hit her like he did. That doesn't make it right, but that causes me to judge the action a little less harshly.
