'16 NJ QB Jarrett Guarantano (Vols commit 4/15/2015)

Just my opinion here, but this same scenario plays out almost every year.

Right now, we have a QB roster of Dobbs, Dormady and Jones. All 3 appear to have all the tools to play QB for us. In 2016, we will add Guarantano to that roster. We will have a senior starter and 3 underclassmen with little to no experience.

After today, we have added Hunter Johnson to that roster in 2017. He will join3 inexperienced QBS in battle for a starting spot. In the next year or two, we could add Dexter Lawrence in the 2018 class to the roster.

Does anyone seriously expect all of these QB's to stick around? Yeah, I hope and expect Guarantano to stick around. But, I fully expect that either he or Johnson will be gone by 2018. To be perfectly honest, I think Jones will be as well. I have a hard time, right now, not believing that Dormady will be our next QB after Dobbs.

I have a real hard time declaring Dormady the heir apparent before we see any of these guys on the field. If CBJ keeps lining up elite QB talent eventually there will come a breaking point, however.

It's probably one of the best problems to have.

Agreed. I think Dormady gets the nod as backup next year then S Jones leaves. Dormady plays 2 years then Guarantano starts as rs sophomore a year later. Then Johnson plays when Guarantano leaves. That's best case scenario IMO.

I think Guarantano will be a Vol. Kid is a competitor.

But if I'm wrong and it turns out he flips because we took a commitment from a top 2017 QB, then he probably isn't the type of kid who could thrive under a Butch Jones led team anyway. Butch is all about competition.

Plus, 2017 is a LONG way away. At this time last year, we all thought Austin Kendall would be our QB in the 2016 class. A kid like Guarantano being frightened off this early would be a big surprise to me.

JG I'm sure knew the possibility of the commitment for 2017 and he knew three qb's signed in 2015. I don't think he's afraid of this competition . In fact he is glad to see it . He will be a vol and in fact headline the class.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading a quote from him where he pretty much acknowledged that he'll likely redshirt and then enter spring 2017 competing for the QB job.

I doubt he's half as worried about competing with Johnson as he is focused on improving and taking the QB job in 2017.

One of the Rutgers mods(Michael Foti)on 247 explaining his crystal ball flip

He's clueless about JGs recruitment. It's all based on the twitter follows.

I wonder if this guy is aware of the fact that Butch Jones has a very long history with the Guarantano family. Butch was an assistant coach at Rutgers (1990-92) when Jarrett's father, James Guarantano, was a wide receiver there. The elder Guarantano "left as one of the most prolific receivers in school history. Guarantano was second All-Time in Scarlet Knight history in yards (2,065), first in receptions (158) and third in touchdowns (11). In 1999, he was inducted into the Rutgers football Hall of Fame" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Guarantano).

Jarrett committed to Tennessee over Ohio State and his father's alma mater. Personally I am not the least bit concerned about Jarrett decommitting.

Elite programs recruit elite players in every class at every position, including QB. Butch, provided on the field results begin to mirror his recruiting results, is going to recruit elite players in every class at every position, including QB. Guarantano and Johnson are both elite players and are in different classes. So, this is not that unusual at elite programs but is unusual at lesser programs, like we (UT) has been for a decade, and this type of recruiting is usually reserved for national title contenders alone. It is impossible to know whether Dormady or Jones will ultimately emerge between the two or if Guarantano, Johnson, or both will supplant the elder QBs once they arrive (if both arrive). All I know is that this is a great problem to have. If Guarantano sticks, and I hope he does because I believe (even with Johnson onboard) that his skill set is perfect for Butch's offense and he could be the long term starter here even over Johnson, etc. I do, however, think it is unlikely that Dormady, Jones, Guarantano, and Johnson each finish their careers here. It is possible that Guarantano flips elsewhere. If that happens, we need to hope Dormady or Jones will be capable players and that Johnson sticks and pans out. This scenario is a good one. If Guarantano sticks (and I think he does given he is a stud in his own right and knew we were recruiting Johnson), the QB battles at UT will be fierce and it is very likely UT will have one or more future NFL QBs on the roster at the same time. There will probably be one or two transfers by the backups who end up in the same graduating class but that is normal. This is the best case scenario. Another scenario is that one or two of the QBs leave for the NFL early because they're so awesome and that would open up more opportunities for the QBs. In short, this is a great problem to have and I hope Guarantano and Johnson both stick but things will be fine either way.

Sir, what is your coffee of choice? I need me sum that.

I'd rather he stick to Tennessee, but I certainly don't want Butch to recruit lesser players to placate existing players.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but losing JG while it would not be good if Jones gets redshirted he in turn will be our freshman quarterback. And then you would have hunter Johnson coming in. From all the reports doesn't matter who the quarterback is it comes in because the dormandy seems to b the man when Dobbs leaves

At this point, I honestly don't know if there is an N in Dormady or not.

Only two things i disagree with are:

1. I do not think Jones makes it to 2018.
2. Guarantano will not go to the NFL early. Dual threat QB's do not generally rate highly with NFL teams. They prefer the standard drop back QB.
