^^^^^absolutely this

Walked into a bigger competition here than OSU by far.

I wouldn't go that far. It's def not a running from competition thing but he def chose the better depth chart among the serious contenders OSU and TN.

OSU will return Cardale Jones and JT after Miller graduates. Those two are known to the world as everyone has seen what they can do in a game. They also signed Gibson and Burrows. While these last two are lesser known they offer a lot of the same talent that JG does.

While here at TN, Dobbs is your only known commodity. he will be a SR for JGs freshman yr. he needs a RS year anyway like most every QB. QD is an unknown despite being really impressive in practice. What does he look like come game time? The same to be said for JJ and Jones. They are unknowns. JG brings to the table almost a q, JJ and Jones package all into 1 player. He has the cannon arm, he can fly like JJ and competitive as all get out. He is the closest thing to Dobbs we will have but with a much stronger arm. He will be the most talented QB on campus day 1 but it takes more than talent to play QB so when he actually plays is up to him and his playbook

Most are actually assuming Jones leaves after this year as well. There is also a GA kid named Collier that RS last year on the roster that is also getting good reviews.

Not that tenn fans care but next year looks like this:

Miller (RS SR)
Jones (RS JR)
Barrett (RS SO)
Collier (RS FR)
Burrow and Gibson (FR)

I fully expect Barrett to win the job again next year.

@rockytopinsider: If Jarrett Guarantano had any more of a rocket arm, Joshua Dobbs would have to study it.

Loaded - no doubt about it. We are a 2-3 years behind that type of situation. However, once JG gets here we are closer to it and the talent gap has closed considerably. :hi:

Honestly not sure why anyone would want to commit there as a QB unless you're a die hard fan. You guys are beyond stacked!

Here are some comments from recruiting analyst Brian Dohn of Scout who has followed Guarantano for a few years.

He’s a kid that can put the ball down and run with it and pick up yards. He’s a legit 4.5-4.6 (40-yard-dash) kid,” Scout national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn said. “He’s big, he’s got a big arm. His accuracy is good. He can throw on the run. He’s comfortable in the pocket.”

He’s a kid that tests really well," Dohn said. "He’s done phenomenal in the combines. I know a lot of guys criticize him (and say), ‘Oh, he’s a combine guy,’ but he’s never really had a chance in games. Some of the schools he plays against in North Jersey are packed with talent and they don’t have that same caliber of talent, especially in the playmaking spots.”

“He’s your typical dual-threat kid who can run really well. He’s got a really strong arm. He throws well on the run. He can throw the deep ball,” Dohn said.

“He’s tough, he’s mentally tough, and he understands the game. When you look at what Butch Jones wants in a quarterback, this is the kid.”

He is comfortable in the pocket, and he does a good job of feeling pressure and sliding into open areas. Even when he is forced to scramble, he keeps his eyes down the field and looks for receivers.

Guarantano has the ability to tuck the ball and run, and the speed to outrun linebackers and if he has a step on a defensive back, catching him could be difficult.

Final Thought: Guarantano has a chance to be an elite college quarterback because of his combination of arm strength, ability to make yards with his feet and his mental toughness. He works hard at the game, and Tennessee has a perfect system to fit his talents as a throw-first dual-threat quarterback.
