'16 TN ATH JoeJuan Williams

I think for him to end up at Vandy Mason will have to be retained as HC for at least another year. One thing is for sure in the next 4 years there will certainly be alot of coaching turnover at Vandy and alot of losing. :eek:k:

I would like to see Butch Jones replace John Jancek with Derek Mason (Once he gets fired).

I could think of worse scenarios. If I were Butch I would file that away as a possibility moving forward if we don't show improvement on defense and go 5-1 down the stretch. Still though that seems doubtful.

Supposedly he is leaning towards Vandy

I didn't know he didn't want to play football after college.

Seriously. I cannot wrap my mind around why anyone would choose to play football at Vandy, if there is ANY other D1 school looking at them......ANY other. Hell, there are several FCS schools I would choose over Vandy.

I did hear a rumor that Joejuan is dating Derek Mason's daughter but I have no clue if true and don't plan on trying to find out because that would be kinda weird.

Come on Mason, surely you aren't that desperate to land a recruit :eek:lol:

Eazy I think that is the trump card Mason is playing. "As long as I am retained as Head Coach I can possibly bring in the State's best player!! If I am not retained he will be going to Tennessee." It is using Williams to leverage his job at Vandy no doubt. And it is using his own daughter somewhat as well. I mean Football matters in the South even at Vanderbilt!!!!

One thing to think about in regard to the potential that Jones replaces Jancek is his highly loyal mentality when it comes to staff retainment. Replacing Jancek with a different DC would almost certainly lead to additional defensive coaching changes, which I am sure Butch Jones would be opposed to. Defensively, I say hang on to Stripling, and Thigpen and get rid of the other two.

It is difficult to ascertain the cause of our defensive struggles. Is it coaching, talent, scheme... ??

I think you could probably keep Jancek on staff maybe do a co-defensive coordinator thing but you would have to make at least one change on the staff so as to have room for Mason. And this defensive staff severely needs to show improvement in the final 6 games of the season and the Vols need to go 5-1 down the stretch or I think Butch will have to make a change or 2. But that's just speculation. Who knows?

I find it hard to believe that Derek Mason would take a co-defensive coordinator role. The guy is probably a top 10 DC in collegiate football. With our athletes, I would take Derek Mason over John Jancek every time.

I can't argue with that statement it was just a comment by me to suggest that they both could be on the staff in some way. Maybe you demote Jancek to a position coach and hire Mason as your def coordinator. I don't think any of that is in play right now. First of all Vandy has to fire Mason and Tennessee has to regress on defense enough to warrant a change. Both are possible. I am hoping though that Tennessee improves greatly on defense in the final 6 games and Butch doesn't have to consider making changes although thats probably in play with the secondary coach even now!!

Yeah. You are probably right. And honestly, it is difficult to know where exactly to place blame. Is it Willie Martinez's fault that Rashan Gaulden got hurt? Is it his fault that he has to work within Jancek's defensive scheme? Is it his fault that our D-Line has underproduced? There are alot of factors that play into defensive success.

Also, I would say that two of our DB starters, Malik Foreman and Emmanuel Moseley, are sub-SEC caliber. This is another issue.

This is why signing players like JoeJuan Williams is so crucial. How nice would it have been to sign Jalen Ramsey and the Ohio State kid a few years back? We missed on both, two players we really needed on this team IMO. Rico McGraw is another player that should have never left the state.

Mason is a better DC than Jancek, I agree, but injuries have killed our chance at having a great D this year. Losing Gaulden and Swafford destroyed our back end depth. Maggitt's injury made matters even worse.

I thought CJJ did a good job on the final drive. We rushed 4 until they crossed the 50 and then dropped more into coverage which was the right move. It was Jancek's idea to have Randolph back up Cam on the last play and he correctly predicted Lambert would force one to Mitchell.

You're right. And I don't know what Butch's plans are right now with 6 games left. But at this point with 6 games to go it is inexcusable to not show marked improvement on defense and in the secondary in the final 6 games. The schedule is weaker (with the exception of Bama) and this defensive staff has been together for 2 1/2 years and has had ample time to recruit and coach up players for these final 6 games. I think really anything less than 5-1 and marked improvement on defense should be demanded and expected!! I am sure it is. If not I think he will have to make staff adjustments at seasons end. And if secondary recruiting needs to be addressed then now is the time to address it IMO!!!!

Per Corner (aka Buck)

Williams is a great prospect, from a UT prospective he offers things physically that they don't have in the secondary which is great length, athletic ability and versatility. As far as where he will choose, I doubt he know where he is going currently. He will make a decision after he takes his official visits. I would watch out for LSU, Texas A&M, Penn St (relationship with Franklin and the Shoop family), and Alabama who is pushing for a OV. Obviously I would put UT right in that group along with Vandy. It will be interesting to see where he takes his visits.

I hope she looks like her mother.

If we were to find a replacement for Jancek, I would rather it be Strong. Strong may still get another year, but his seat is definitely warm.

I don't know that Jancek's seat is warm but I would have to think Martinez's seat is hot!! Now if that defense does not improve in these last 6 games considerably against weaker competition then yes Jancek's seat could get very warm!! The defense only allowed 17 pts against Georgia so I thought maybe they did better. But that secondary has to show improvement in this next month. It just has too.
