“Everyone around here loves the Vols. It’s everywhere. You can’t ignore it even if you tried,” Mathews said. “I’ve always paid attention to them and watched them like my whole life. I mean, I pull for them unless they’re playing A&M.”

Also said staying close to home will be a factor in his decision, so that helps

Excluding Texas, I'd say...

1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. Virginia
4. Louisiana
4a. North Carolina
6. Alabama
7. Tennessee
8. Missouri (if you include E. St. Louis, IL)
9. Mississippi
10. South Carolina

NC doesn't produce better than Alabama. Look at what Saban does on the regular with talent from here. Auburn isn't too shabby either.

Well, my list wasn't exactly a scientific study, so a few of them are perhaps interchangeable up or down a spot. It was just my opinion and I threw the list together in literally less than 3 minutes.

I think it's a little closer than your bold declarative, "NC doesn't produce better than Alabama."

A quick glance at the Rivals 250 going back to 2010 shows 47 kids from NC and 50 kids from Alabama. So, at worst, they are pretty comparable, and it's not like I had NC at #4 and Alabama at #10. Swap them on your list if you want.

“It’s just a great place, but it’s one of those places that has so much to offer. It’s like, you think you know everything about Tennessee, then I come back up and learn more,” Mathews told InsideTennessee. “This place just gets better and better each time I come up.” ... “I’m really impressed by Tennessee. They make a big impression on me every time, but I want to really experience this process,” Mathews said. “I’m open to anything and I’m not going to rush it.”

“it’s really still kind of even[.] no real favorite right now. I mean, i like both the schools that have offered so far.”

“(tennessee’s spring game) was awesome,” said mathews, who’s a teammate of top247 sophomore offensive tackle ryan johnson. “there was a big crowd there — like, 68,000 — and it was nice seeing how big their fan base is and how loyal they are. For just a spring game, that many people showing up, it was pretty cool.

“a big thing that i noticed at tennessee is they talk about how many nfl people they’ve been able to produce, and they say i could potentially be one of those guys, especially with my dad and all that. That’s a long way off from now, but maybe, potentially down the road, that’s something to look at.”

mathews grew up following texas a&m, his father’s alma mater, and aggies wide receivers coach david beaty stopped at brentwood academy on tuesday to take a closer look at mathews.

He admitted it “would be really cool” if he gets an offer from texas a&m.

“it’d be something special,” the younger mathews said. “it wouldn’t be, like, a done deal if they offered or anything, but it would be something cool, just because it’s the team i’ve grown up loving so much. It would be cool.”

Brentwood offensive linemen Ryan Johnson and Bryce Mathews camped with Don Mahoney today and both seemed to really like how Mahoney coached. Johnson is expected back this weekend for the Orange Carpet Day, making it the fourth or fifth time he's been on campus this spring.

Both made it clear they camped today to get to experience Mahoney's coaching style and both felt comfortable.

Texas A&M already has two big time OT's committed for 2016. I think that helps us out tremendously here. Johnson and Matthews are studs.

The #1 and #10 overall players in the country for 2016 according to 247. So yeah, I'd say A&M is set at tackle for next cycle. Pretty amazing job Sumlin is doing in College Station

And Texas being horrible. 5 years and Texas will dominate the state again.
Texas is down at a bad time for them...similar to our situation in 2008. OU is back, Baylor has it rolling under Briles, and Tech is on a serious upswing, and then there's A&M. Oklahoma State is no slouch either.

I think they'll wander in the abyss with Charlie for 3-4 years through some 6 or 7 win seasons before they can him and have to start all over again

I disagree, but we'll see. I think it'll be intriguing to watch. Lot or good coaches in the state of Texas.

I'm not.totally sold on tech. I feel they're trendy. But we'll see.

FWIW I have a small, like mega small connection to the Horns program. Will likely never get info out of it, or really want info. That being said, Texas will be better under Strong. IMO they will be a consistent 7-11 win team.

A quote from Ryan Johnson on the possibility of Mathews joining him at UT:

The Vols staff could land Mathews as well.

“Definitely,” Johnson told InsideTennessee. “That’s a huge possibility for us. We both realize there’s only two tackle spots at a school and sometimes that doesn’t always work out with that school. But, us being such great friends that’d be a huge, huge thing for us.”
