'16 TN OL Bryce Mathews (Ole Miss commit)

“It was just kind of different just because there really wasn’t a whole lot of football about it,” he told InsideTennessee. “It was kind of a get-together to socialize and play games and talk. It was a fun experience. I was glad I was able to go and spend time with the guys.”

Is this a normal visit for a guy that has said he was committing within a month or so? I know this sounds absurd but any chance the staff backed off? I can't imagine that would be the case but just asking. Any chance? Our recruiting momentum has seemed to have flat lined lately. On the filed results are going to be very important this year.

Sounds like it. I'm slightly worried about this recruiting class.

I understand worrying about RB, but I wouldn't get to bent out of shape over Matthews.

We've still got a great shot at Dickerson and both Tatum and Price seem to be interested in us as well.

I thought Matthews would be someone we wanted, but everyone has to remember what has been stated since last signing day: we will have slow times simply because of our numbers. The staff has to really pick and choose this year. They know the ones who we have the best chance of getting. Everyone is free to express opinions, but I am not sure why we would second guess Butch right now.

Man, this is a little disappointing. Need to keep this kind of talent at home.

This has been kind of a disappointing week of recruiting...BJ Emmons commits to the inbreds, Matthews appears to be going somewhere else, No NJ connection, Holyfield didn't visit...this is a crazy year.

So is this a case of us striking out, or we have him down the board?

He is down the board compared to Dickerson, Williams and Tatum but not sure if that means we wouldn't have accepted a commit at this time or not. I would think we probably would have since it's a Brentwood kid with NFL bloodline

Feaster is visiting though which could get really interesting. We're still pretty solid in Oline recruiting at this point also.

This may be true. But we are on everyones discussion list right now like we've already won. Bizarre that we are at our highest point in years yet a lot of situations are going the other way. Strange.

I'm beginning to worry as well. I wonder if we have been a little TOO cautious because of the limited spots and it hasn't allowed Butch and staff to go all out like they have the last two classes. Just thinking out loud.

Again, it's early.

Was spurned by Richmond early also. To Brett Beliemas dismay, just because a recruit "commits"in July doesn't mean you stop recruiting him.

every year people panic in July, every February we kneel to the Recruiting Throne of Sir Butch. You would think people would learn but alas...

This year doesn't feel a little different to you? It does to me and I am usually a "wait until it all plays out" kind of guy. Seems like we may be taking more 2nd or 3rd options this class.

Clemson or Ole Miss. I think Dickerson is the only OL we are hard after at this point due to the smaller class size. Not that we didn't want Mathews but I don't think they were putting the "Josh Malone" recruitment on him by any means.

It's different because we don't have 28-30 scholarships to throw out there. Butch and Co. are more selective. Our class in July 2014 looked way different in February. I chose to wait to freak out. If we fall flat on our face in February, I'll join in. I have faith that Butch has something up his sleeve. He has every year thus far.

This is said every year in July also.

I'd rather be able to back count in 2017 than "settle" on 2nd and 3rd options just to fill a certain number at each position
