'17 Class discussion (split)

Ok, I'll play along.

We have 4 4* today. Add Gibbs, Smith, Chandler, Williams(not a lock imo), and Gaddy. Takes us to 9 4*. Add Higgins as a 5* and Gaddy as a 3*.

That's 1 5*, 9 4* and 14 3*.

Top 5-7? I don't think so.

You're just using opinion. Im using stats to back it up. If you can't see it will be a top 10 class u probably don't follow recruiting

Wish I could find something funny but this is the type of class that won't rank in the top 25 on signing day. Mark it down, we just jumped the shark today. Coming from a lifelong fan and alum.

No one cares. Go graduate from a different school...please. :good!:

I'm just using opinion? You realize you're including all the "locks" in your sure thing top 5 class right?

I never said it's a sure thing top 5 lmao. I said easily top 10 and it will be. Gfw has said Higgins and multiple others will be a vol. Not to mention they have favored the vols their whole recruitment. I'm sure your opinions is better than theirs tho, right?

You're like a negative version of D4H

I think top 15 is possible. Those screaming top 5 are setting themselves up for disappointment. Top 15 will keep us winning and in SEC title discussions IMO.

No it won't.

If you want to compete for titles you need top 5-10 classes year in year out.

Top 15 won't cut it. We need that only once every 4 years.

Can't believe I'm agreeing with you but I am. Top 15 class in the country means a middle of the pack SEC class. Gotta be top 5 at least half the time

I am not surprised at people being critical of our recruiting. But, my gosh, the same thing has happened every year, and this is year 4 under Butch. People just like to complain. We will end up top 10.

My early opinion was with all the highly touted in state talent, this was a great opportunity for another top 5 class. Needs to at least be top 10. Last year was a down year with limited spots so finishing top 15 was pretty solid. But when you have the normal amount of spots top 10 is a just a must.

When you play Bama and an SEC schedule every year, your have to have top 10 classes pretty much every season. Barring smaller class sizes I guess

I think it's fair to say that we'd all like a few more guys with higher rankings and/or better offer lists mixed in here. And that may still be to come, to top off the weekend. But I think Butch is being about as strategic as one could be so far. Having so many commitments at once and moving up so far in the team rankings in one day creates buzz. And it also creates a perception of scarcity, in the number of positional and overall spots left.

I would agree with you and (trying not to puke) D4H, if not for the fact that there are those out there that are now saying why they have been hyping Tennessee so much. Their words, not mine...."there are other SEC schools that have recruited better than Tennessee, but Tennessee has done a better job of developing their players."

Best staff in America?......maybe?

Let me re-iterate......1/3 of our starters, for the team many are saying are play-off/NC contenders were 3* prospects out of high school.

I'm also curious if by filling up now Butch and staff know by doing so they can concentrate more on the very important season at hand and just focus on the last few pieces recruiting wise.

It was a beautiful day here in God's country -- bright and sunny - beautiful blue sky, not a lot of humidity. The kind of enchanted day in Knoxville where you might get 7 or 8 commits and jump from back in the pack into the top 7 or 8 in the country. We call that a good day here and it is referred to as catching your limit. Sure there will be other days where we catch a big fish or two along the way, but I will still always look back fondly at the day we were reeling them in - as quick as we could get our line in the water. No amount of hand wringing or anguish by the the readers of this thread will dampen my enthusiasm -- because today was magical and it was good. These coaches have a history of selecting talented players and great people to be part of this program, a part of our family, a part of the Orange Nation and these kids have been selected with that in mind. When the dust settles this will be a great class and the rest is semantics imho.

I have to agree that Gray is the only recruit I am impressed with so far. This was a great year in-state and right now we are coming up short. Today set us up for a mediocre class, even if we land some bigger names down the road. I look at the offer lists of some of the guys we are getting and it just makes me shake my head. I love Butch but it seems like he is really reaching on some of these guys.

Half of these guys will get bumps throughout the season. People need to understand that Butch has former NFL scouts working up there viewing tape on kids. I'll trust their decision making. Also, most of these high 4 stars and 5 stars won't start committing for a while. They're enjoying the process, as they should.

No they wont. And please name all these "NFL Scouts" Butch has watching tape.

It's his job on the line. He must see something the services don't.
