'17 CT QB CJ Lewis (Former TN commit 7/23/16)

A lot of you realize he's probably going to read this thread and chances are .00001% of you know what he will do or become. Welcome young man

I agree with your point... and actually none of us know what he will become.

I understand why some are concerned, because while rating should be taken with a grain of salt, it is very rare for a school to win at elite level with more 3 star or lower players than 4 and 5 star.

Exactly, he red shirts waits a couple years behind whoever. Also after a couple of years if he is not progressing as thought he transfers.

One thing about this makes no sense to me. We are bringing this guy in just in case Dormady transfers but Lewis is so raw it will take at least 2 years before he will see the field. If we truly need a back up plan for Dormady then Butch should have gotten someone more polished.

Lewis was on the radar. The coaches wanted to see him and a few other quarterbacks this week at camp before they made their final decision. They decided to offer Lewis and he committed.

This. I believed he camped with us earlier in the summer/spring and showed out as well. He was certainly on the radar. Seems to fit our system. He has plenty of time to develop both in the weight room and the film room. Not a bad pickup if you ask me.

As I've said, kid is very athletic and looks to have a good arm and deep ball. Reminds me a lot of Dobbs. I think it's a great pickup and dont understand why he's so underrated

IMO the back up to Dormady next year is Guarantano. His backup next year ideally is Jones. Jones back up would be Lewis.

Sheriron Jones, baby

He has camped at UT several times-- in the spring, in June and this week. The coaches kept wanting him to come back so they could continue to evaluate him.

Feel bad the kid is seeing those negative tweets from Vol fans on Twitter. But, he said he was going to hang the tweet from Sab on his wall. I like this kid. That determination may take him places

I actually think Q.D. can be a good Qb, I am not sure why so many are negative about his ability. I try not to use the word great because that is harder to predict. I mean there have been Qbs who did not get major D1 offers who became great Qbs.

It takes more than determination to be an elite QB. There were middle schoolers there, too.

Yeah, I am sure that is who they were comparing him too. Come on man.

They know what to look for. Again he only played Qb 1 year, so he has high ceiling. As I said earlier I do not care what you do, play piano, or whatever it takes years to learn.

I hope not. The rising 8th grader outhrew him.

How do you know, where you there (serious question btw)

Also I am sure that 8th grader has been throwing/playing Qb almost his whole life, he has only played senior year.

Maybe they want to use him in "wildcat formations" idk.

“Earlier in the month coach DeBord told me I was number one on their list and that they think highly of me and coach Jones told me that on July 21 he would give me an answer,” Lewis explained. “I’ve just been holding out and going to other schools and visiting other schools. Then, July 21 came and coach Jones offered me that night and he told me they want me to be the quarterback at the University of Tennessee.

“They told me they will give me a little time to pray on it and I took the night to sleep on it and I knew that it was where I wanted to be.”

“I was hoping it was the place a lot. I thought Tennessee would be the best fit for me,” Lewis said. “Me and coach Sheridan are building a good relationship and they’ve been honest with me. Coach Jones is a great guy and I have a growing relationship with him, too. Ever since I stepped on campus and saw what they were all about and saw what they offer their student athletes I knew it was the place.”

“Tennessee is a great place for people who want a family oriented football program. There’s such a family atmosphere,” Lewis explained. “Coach Jones, coach DeBord and coach Sheridan always kept in contact with my parents and they always preached family. That’s what I’m really looking forward to down there. “I like what coach DeBord is doing with Josh Dobbs and I feel like I can do that. They preached that to me, too. I think it was just the best fit.”

Lewis may not be the most heralded quarterback in the class of 2017, but he's a steady performer with some upside attached to him. On tape, one of the the first things that jumps out is his ability to extend plays with his feet and find the open man.

Although he's athletic and has been clocked in the low 4.6s in the forty-yard dash, Lewis' first inclination with pressure coming isn't just to tuck and run. He shows a nice capacity to keep his eyes down the field to find the open receiver.

He also has a nice touch on his deep ball. Lewis doesn't posses the biggest or strongest arm, but he makes up for that by displaying good accuracy and timing.

He doesn't have the cleanest throwing motion, but it's not one that has a lot of corrections to be made either. Lewis' addition at the quarterback spot provides the Vols with an athletic option that can develop over time.

I trust Butch. He has shown to be an expert recruiter and knows how to best fill available spots. This kid is smart, athletic, and has skills that can be developed and improved. He has everything we need in a QB. So.... BOOM! Great pickup ButchCo!
