'17 CT QB CJ Lewis (Former TN commit 7/23/16)

Better to have a 2* bust than a 4 or 5* imo. You are counting on those guys, guys like Quinn are a bonus if they end up being big contributors, and if they don't, big deal just cut em loose and get another schollie to work with.

Yep nobody can negative recruit you for having a 2 star bust but they sure can when North goes undrafted and Malone ain't done **** a 5 star WR should do.

Nobody said CJ is elite. This QB class in general is terrible. Not many elite arms. Davis Mills, Hunter Johnson, Jake Fromm, Tua are basically your only elite arms available on class and all are committed. So if you can't find the obvious elite arm you try out a ton of next level targets and pick your favorite for development which is what TN did. Their eyes are set on the elite 2018 arm now and hopefully Jones jumps on board

Yeah that makes sense and all but **** that **** I want to btch and moan like a little baby!

Chris Donald..Ben Martin..Jantzen Jackson(I know he played well, but you don't help the team when you ain't on it) same goes for Bryce Brown.

Yeah, I am sure that is who they were comparing him too. Come on man.

They know what to look for. Again he only played Qb 1 year, so he has high ceiling. As I said earlier I do not care what you do, play piano, or whatever it takes years to learn.

Another thought, if a QB was taught bad techniques during HS, takes time to break those habits. This kid is a hunk of clay the coaches will be able to mold.. Cheesy I know.. Works for me.

from just a Butch era perspective it's really just been the WR stars being failures at this point. It's the only position I have lots of development questions about. I see guys improve or over achieve at every other position.

Hey Glicht..wheres my fat fluffy unicorn GIF? Perfect spot for it.

You got it buddy!

As Callahan reminded everyone on Twitter, 3 star Mariota had 2 offers: Oregon and Memphis. Who knows what Lewis may develop into

You happy with this pick up? Not concerned a little?

I think I can speak for him, at least myself anyways when I say I do not have a problem with saying something like, ' I am A LITTLE concerned with getting so many lower rated recruits', but not to the point that some have taken it which CJ is taking it personally.

Why would anyone be concerned?
There's only a few possible outcomes.
He doesn't make the final class.
He stays and never plays a meaningful snap, no harm if there another motive/reason.
He actually plays at this position or another because he has potential we are unaware of.

Seems like a lot of over reactions for not a lot of harm.

No. I don't think this pickup matters all that much to be honest. Not every pickup is a star in high school, that's just reality even for SEC teams. We have 3 highly recruited 4 star QB's on the roster ahead of him and the coaches are all in for an elite '18 QB.

The truth is this QB class is weak and we didn't land one of the few great ones so it's all about finding that diamond and developing him to be a contributor down the road in a few years and most likely just a good backup to the guys ahead of him and hopefully an elite '18 QB behind him.

Best case he develops into another Butch and Bob diamond or worst case he's a career backup or transfers in two years.

And he sounds like a good kid, hard worker, and really excited to be a Vol. So I say we welcome this young man with open arms and let him be the best Vol he can be. JMO.

Probably just a matter of time. I just can't see Butch sticking with this class as it currently stands. That is what gets me about this latest commit, spots are at a premium now.

So why complain about the class so much now if you cant see Butch sticking with it as it currently stands? Spots are NOT at a premium in July. If that were true, then teams would just take the Leb aporoach to recruiting. Fill up the 2017 class by September and stop recruiting for that class. Guess what though? That doesnt hapoen. Even guys like Saban and Meyer recruit right up until NSD.

I agree..that wasn't my point. My point is that it is better to have a 2* like Woody Quinn fail, than a 4 or 5* supposedly can't miss, impact player. Woody was never being counted on. If he had contributed, it would have been gravy.

Every time we get a low ranked QB commit someone brings out that one in a million 2 star player who did well. When has that ever happened at UT. From Heath to Peyton to Tee to Casey Clausen to Josh Dobbs to Conredge Holloway to Andy Kelly. I can't think of any QB who made it as a low ranked recruit.

I can get behind this. One of the backups will probably transfer next year so it's a good take. Gotta admit though, I thought we'd pass on a QB this year. But I guess it makes sense once you consider where we stand with 2018 QBs. T. Lawrence doesn't seem interested anymore. E. Jones seems 50/50 us and OSU.
