'17 FL OLB Shanon Reid (UT Committ 12/7/2016)

I don't like to nitpick (but I will) Reid played at Dunbar HS in Ft Myers, while Fil-Aime and Byrd were at Naples HS, 30 miles south of Ft Myers.
They did not play together in high school

When you're 30 miles apart you played together. Stop splitting hairs that aren't there. Same as Gatlinburg-Pittman and Sevierville, Maryville and Alcoa...on and on.

No he's right. The way I wrote it was worded incorrectly.

What a great area though. Tyler Byrd looks like a sure star and Fils-aime showed flashes in limited playing time. I think he just needs to get bigger/stronger. Can't wait to see what Reid can do here at a position of need.

Fils-Aimes is one of a thousand Haitian Creole studs from that area. I remember that Pahokee calls plays and speaks in creole during games. When they check off, nobody knows what's going on but Pahokee players.

Very true. There are always several highly touted players each year from around here. It's a good place to be well received and Coach Scott is just that.

He has a sophomore teammate that will turn some heads this summer and into next year.

There are a lot of kids from his area who slip through the cracks and never make it. The fact that he's graduating early and an EE should tell you the type of kid he is.

Dunbar is notorious for great athletes who mess up, get caught up in the wrong stuff, and never make it out of their situations. Shanon should be commended for his hard work and dedication in getting where he is now. Can't wait to see him succeed.

If anyone is interested in reading more about the dynamic surrounding athletes in his area, there's a great book recently written called 4th Down in Dunbar by a guy named David Dorsey. Very insightful on the struggle a lot of youth in the area face and have to overcome in order to achieve success.

If any of you are interested:

I agree but I'd rather have this and tell him to calm down just a bit rather than trying to light a fire under him
He's from Deon Sanders' hometown and even wears the same #21 and that's for reason. He's likely to walk the talk and this could be a good thing for an aggressive defense that UT feels Shoop can bring. Still need to go all out for good DT's and 1 more CB. I personaly don't care for the over-swagger type of player but the ability to back it goes a long ways in building a winner and I've got a good feeling about this guy. Shannon the Cannon.....sounds good

“As soon as I step on campus, I’ll be the number-two guy,” said Reid, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 234 overall prospect and No. 16 outside linebacker in the 2017 class. “The number-one guy, he won’t even be there all spring, I guess, because he’s getting surgery or he’s had an injury or something like that. That’ll be a good opportunity for me, so I can go in and start my freshman year.”

“I’m going to start, because I know I’m going to work better than anybody else. I know for sure that I’m going to be starting before the season,” said Reid, who announced his commitment to Tennessee on Dec. 7. “I’m versatile. I can come at people and hit. I can blitz off the edge. I can guard man-to-man. I’m a big playmaker. I can change the game around.”

His recruitment didn’t exactly come to an end with his commitment to Tennessee last month. He said a couple of other schools approached him over the past several weeks in hopes of changing his mind, but he didn’t give them serious consideration.

“Out of nowhere, Oregon and Florida came and tried to get in the picture,” Reid said. “I know Oregon had an offer, and Florida kind of was trying to see if I was interested. They didn’t talk to me. They talked to my coach, though.”

“I’m going to add weight regardless. But, really, (I will be) just getting the plays, just learning the plays,” he said. “They said this spring I can get up to 215 (pounds). And, by the season, 225.”

Reid, who expects to wear jersey No. 21 for the Vols — the number previously worn by starting linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin — said Tennessee linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen has “told me I’ve got a great opportunity to play early." "He said, even though I’m coming in, he’s going to put me out there because he knows I can do it,” Reid said. “Just knowing that I can come in and fill in the gap that they had this whole last season. All those games that they lost, it was because the linebackers got hurt. They had a lot of injuries.”

“We’re going to take it to the national championship,” Reid said. “Just knowing, how we’re recruiting, it’s a great class. The older guys that are there, now they know they’ve got young guys that are going to be ready to eat. Now they know that they have to work harder or they’re going to lose their spot. That’s how it is, though. Every day, you’ve got to get your reps. You can’t waste any reps.”
