'17 GA LB Solon Page III (UT signee)

He's listed at 6'2 207lbs, so not that much taller than Maybin. But yes I think another 15-20 lbs is more realistic, and that's plenty heavy enough for a freshman LB. I'm pretty excited about this LB group in general. We got to see Jumper emerge in a pretty decent player last year, and Mcdowell got some seriously good experience he otherwise wouldn't have. Looking at who we have on the roster:

Proven guys like Kirland, Jumper, Mcdowell would get the obvious starts, then you have guys like Bituli and Berry who got some time last year. Definitely feel like Sapp could have a good year considering how much talk there was about him before he was injured early. Then consider Bates and Bryant, who were both touted 4 stars who haven't "shown up" yet. But then again Malone and Croom didn't really have great/great years until later in their college careers. I think people forget about RS FRBlakely, but that kid is talented as well. Finally, Ignont, Reid and Page could see early playing time this coming season too, Ignont in particular. That guy is huge.

One thing is for sure, there is A LOT of talent at LB. Hopefully Thig and Rock can turn them into some studs in the SEC.

EDIT: 8/12 of those guys were 4 stars coming out of high school. 9/12 if you count Page..which I do.
I'm not gonna comment on his entire season because I haven't rewatched it all but.... I was watching the Georgia game this past week and Jumper was horrible that game. I know he has been ridiculed a lot and I don't mean to pile on but I hope we aren't relying on him for any significant minutes this year.

He has some good play, more as the season progressed. However, there were a lot of times when the MLB, DE, CB or the S were out of position or caught up in the traffic which resulted in many of the long running plays. These conditions increased as the injuries mounted and inexperienced players where having to play. I expect that the defense will be much better in 2017 because of the S&C coaching change, the experienced returning player being healthy again, and the ability of some of the true freshmen being capable of playing. Depth should be better and the team will be more familiar with Shoop's defense.

hes about an inch taller

Maybin is right at 6'0"

Page is 6'3"

Regardless, page has a much bigger frame and can add some solid muscle and contribute immediately.

I don't think he needs to add 30 so quickly

DTs were healthy in the Ga game.

Jumper had 11 tackles, a TFL, and a forced fumble against Georgia. I am sure he made mistakes, but How is that a bad game worthy of never seeing significant minutes again?

Depends where the tackles were on the field. I only got through the first half and he had a rough half. Did you watch it and key on his position or just look at the stat sheet?

I have not watched GA game recently. What I did remember was he graded out high for a couple of games in the Florida-A&M stretch. So I looked at the stats for those 3 games where he led the team in tackles in all three games and had an INT against A&M.
We won two of those games and almost beat A&M. I am glad he is a VOL.

Like I said in my original post, my intention wasn't to "pile on". Agree to disagree about his level of play. To be fair to him, I don't really think any of our LBs played well last year.

I didn't mean to imply that he was all SEC or anything, but I think it's fair to say that he had a decent season. Had 8 tackles against Florida, 11 against UGA and 10 against Texas A&M (that stretch he was starting in place of DKjr). I don't think he'll be "first string" next year as long as Kirkland, Mcdowell and Bituli are healthy, but he'll see playing time for sure. Gained some valuable experience this year in tough times and really helped us as our LB group got thinner and thinner.

Back on topic however, it should be really exciting to see how these freshman impact the season. Shoop said they got the guys they wanted at LB. Ignont was wanted by all the big boys, Reid is "confident" he'll be in the starting rotation by the beginning of the season, and Page was on the Parade AA team along side multiple 5 star players. This is as talented group of LBs we've gotten in a while. Kirkland, Sapp and Austin Smith class was great also, but seems like we really got some solid guys here.

We sure have one hell of a coaching staff here on VN! Wasted resources..

He was terrible against A&M and Georgia if you watched them. He was good against Florida but they suck offensively.

Those tackles were 5-10 yards down field. Not at the LOS or in the box where they should be made.

Nice...way to have a negative outlook on a guy who busted ass for us this season despite the fact that he may not be as fast or as instictual as Kirkland and JRM who were out with injury. Point is he made the tackle, wherever it was on the field, because someone else missed. Did he whiff on tackles this year? Sure. But it seems as though you looked right past the point of my post and did your best to unearth something bad to say about the kid. What's the matter with you.

so he shouldn't have made the tackles and let the safeties get it?

dumb comment is dumb

He made plays, we never hated on Barnett chasing guys down 10 yards down the field because he didn't make the tackle at the LOS.

I think the point he was trying to make is that linebackers should be making plays at the line of scrimmage. He's correct but I'm not certain that the tackles downfield are a function of poor linebacker play but rather a function of interior DL play. If there is no penetration by the DL it is too congested for linebackers to find or reach a proper gap to make a line of scrimmage play. We will hopefully get some of that resolved before next season if we get healthy and stronger in the trenches.

Can't handle an opposing viewpoint? You think Jumper played satisfactorily based on stats, and others think he was below average based on observation. It's okay to have opinions on here and to discuss them, you know.

My opinion: Jumper is not athletic or instinctual enough to be playing meaningful snaps for us. I'm glad he played with the effort he did, and he showed some improvement from the previous year. But I hope we have other LBs ahead of him this year, or I feel we aren't where we need to be.

Job number one is showing up. Jumper certainly did that and all of appreciate his desire and hustle.

Job number two is performance. Unfortunately he doesn't posses instincts or physical ability to diagnose and react in the fast and violent way a linebacker needs to. Linebackers should attack and punish and not grab and hang on.

It is what it is but I don't think posters are mad with Jumper. They're mad with the fact he's forced to play in year 4 of Jones tenure. That's on Thig and Jones.

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything?? We follow the team, watch the games and make judgements based off that. We ALL do that, you included, so I'm not sure what your point of mocking me for my opinion is? Just because you don't agree with it?
