Quotes from VQ

"Especially that last visit we were at for the Orange Carpet Day, that was really a fun day for us," Johnson said. "I was around some of the recruits and I think that was definitely the day that made me feel comfortable at Tennessee."

"He was really, really excited," Johnson said. "I called him earlier in the day and he said I made his day. He said Coach (Mike) DeBord was jumping up and down and excited."

"One of the big things for me was just the coaching staff there at Tennessee and just the energy around Tennessee right now," Johnson said. "Coach Jones is a great, great coach and I have been developing a great relationship with Coach DeBord. The fan base at Tennessee is obviously huge and one of the best in college football. It is a very special place and I am happy to be a part of it."

"Honestly, my recruiting started really early so it doesn't feel like (the decision) is that early for me," Johnson said. "I just feel like it is really the right decision for me and I am really excited for it."

"It was definitely a very tough decision and obviously a very big decision," Johnson said. "It was tough for me and my family, but we all feel really good about it and we're really confident about it. I'm just really excited about Tennessee and will definitely be back for plenty of games this year."

"I definitely am going to start talking to guys and get them to come to Tennessee as well," Johnson said. "I really feel like we will be able to pick up recruiting in the 2017 class and I'm excited about it."

Hunter had a really bad game game Friday night. First half was okay 13-20 190 yds but second half 5-15 74 yards. His team lost 55-34. His stats last year were not great either but he was just a sophomore. Maybe his team is just terrible.

On the bright side Hunter runs track and has 400m of 53.09. That's pretty decent for a high school Sophomore. I know how VolNation loves 400m times.

Can't recruit scared but I really hope we don't lose Guarantano. Just because Hunter is #1 rated QB right now doesn't mean he will still be this time next year.

His #1 ranking has less to do with his high school stats and more his arm strength, decision-making, footwork in the pocket, camp performances, etc. High school stats can be ridiculously inflated for mediocre guys on great teams or in certain systems, or they can be average/bad for super talented guys on bad teams. If his OL and WRs suck, he will never put up great stats.

His HS team is awful. He is running for his life every throw

Yeah I know but I would still like to see him perform better in actual games. His team does have some 2-3 star skill position players. I'm guessing the OL is terrible but then again their running back had over 1500 yards last year and is committed to Iowa. Anyway I know you can't put to much stock in HS stats either way.

Brownsburg (Johnson) is scheduled play Avon (Brandon Peters) on ESPNU Sept 11.

^This. I watched the video posted earlier tonight of every throw he made in his game and was reminded heavily of how Worley/Dobbs had to run for the their life last year. It also reminded me of last years team in how they threw those stupid horizontal passes to the HB all the time because Johnson just didn't have any time to throw a decent pass.

These are rough estimates, but of the 38 pass attempts, he threw 21 passes under pressure and his receivers dropped 6 passes. And the best pocket he had all night he threw a pretty nice deep ball (could've led his receiver just a bit more) which ended up being a 70+ yard TD.

He has all the tools to be an NFL QB, we just need to sign as many stud OL we can this class so they will be ready. EJ Price would be a nice start.

"When you compare him to other 2017 kids, nobody throws the football like him. I've seen Hunter compete in a lot of elite events and he's been the best quarterback on the field regardless of class. He's proven he can make all the throws and he's a good athlete who made the state finals on the track team. I don't think he's done maturing physically. When you add in the intangibles, all that adds up to make him the nation's No. 1 quarterback."
- 247sports national analyst Steve Wiltfong

For Johnson, it's his elite arm that distinguishes him as one of the top quarterbacks in the country in his class. He has the ability to make all the throws, whether it's dropping it in over the top to his wide out in stride or showing near-perfect accuracy in tight spaces. Johnson puts outstanding zip on the ball when needed but understands when its called upon to exhibit touch and dial back the pace. He's capable of a quick release and more often than not doesn't hold on to the ball too long.

Johnson isn't a dual-threat, but he has sound pocket awareness and can buy time with his feet as he scans the field and goes through his progressions.

This commitment makes the timing of that Notre Dame homer piece pretty funny.

You could tell they only asked ND questions, and his lukewarm responses were telling.

"Hunter, how big is your relationship with coach xxxx?"

"Yeah, it's big. We've got a good relationship..."

Gotta read behind the hidden questions in the recruits responses

Similar to why Christian Hackenberg is considered the #1 QB available for next year's NFL class despite throwing more INTs than TDs last season. He was in a new system on a young team. Scouts recognize his skill and intangibles.

Same can be said for Johnson at the HS level.

Not going to lie I got a pro-Tennessee feel from that piece even though it tried to put the ND twist on it. There was a part about HJ saying how good his relationship was with Jones and Debord and then saying that he was trying to develop a closer relationship with Brian Kelly. How the hell has a head coach not developed a great relationship with his primary target at QB at that point?

Worley's HS stats screamed can't miss, though others said beware of system QB. Can't base everything off stats.

Think we should have taken note that Spurrier didn't offer a South Carolina kid? :hmm:

In Worley's defense, he wasn't a bad qb. He made the throws when he had time. He just wasn't an elite qb by any stretch of the imagination and did not have much mobility.
