Hunter had a really bad game game Friday night. First half was okay 13-20 190 yds but second half 5-15 74 yards. His team lost 55-34. His stats last year were not great either but he was just a sophomore. Maybe his team is just terrible.
On the bright side Hunter runs track and has 400m of 53.09. That's pretty decent for a high school Sophomore. I know how VolNation loves 400m times.
Can't recruit scared but I really hope we don't lose Guarantano. Just because Hunter is #1 rated QB right now doesn't mean he will still be this time next year.
^This. I watched the video posted earlier tonight of every throw he made in his game and was reminded heavily of how Worley/Dobbs had to run for the their life last year. It also reminded me of last years team in how they threw those stupid horizontal passes to the HB all the time because Johnson just didn't have any time to throw a decent pass.
These are rough estimates, but of the 38 pass attempts, he threw 21 passes under pressure and his receivers dropped 6 passes. And the best pocket he had all night he threw a pretty nice deep ball (could've led his receiver just a bit more) which ended up being a 70+ yard TD.
Johnsons commitment has Tennessee debuting at No. 18 in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings very early in 2017. With the way he carries himself, other recruits will enjoy being around the Hoosier State standout who will certainly be excited to make the calls and build relationships with future Tennessee targets.
Jones and company overhauled the roster with those two recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015, upgrading the roster in the trenches and at the skill positions on both sides of the ball. No program played more true freshmen then Tennessee did last fall and the Vols head into the season as one of the favorites in the SEC East. Its looking like UT has a chance to be considered a top contender to win the SEC outright for many years to come.
Similar to why Christian Hackenberg is considered the #1 QB available for next year's NFL class despite throwing more INTs than TDs last season. He was in a new system on a young team. Scouts recognize his skill and intangibles.
Same can be said for Johnson at the HS level.
Hackenberg has a great arm but his decision making is awful. Yes many have him going #1 but a growing number have him as the most overrated prospect in the 16 or 17 draft. Hackenberg looks the part but will need to deliver before he goes anywhere near #1. Results especially in college still matter.
his td to int ratio was a concern in hs too. some qb's improve their accuracy somewhat but he'll be drafted on potentialHackenberg has a great arm but his decision making is awful. Results matter but they must be placed IN CONTEXT. If Hackenberg played with a roster like Ohio State and was still putting up mediocre stats, then that would raise major red flags. But if his offensive line continues to struggle and if those young receivers don't start making plays, then talent evaluators will overlook the numbers just like they're overlooking last years production.
No one is saying production doesn't matter. But it must be placed in context. There are way too many examples in the NFL of guys putting up ridiculous stats and failing and guys putting up middling stats and being studs. At the end of the day, the draft like recruiting will always be first and foremost about talent and what a player CAN BE rather than production and what the player also is.

Find me a QB drafted in the top 3 of quarterbacks that had more int's to td's in college the year before he was drafted. Also getting sacked as much as Hackenberg was last year is as much his fault as his OL and WR. Not making decisions fast enough and making bad decisions are a great "talent's" down fall. How many elite QB's on paper fail? That doesn't mean he won't improve though. There's no denying that stats are not the end all but I'll take a QB with a great arm and great stats over a QB with a great arm and terrible stats anyday. All I ever said about Hunter Johnson is I would like to see better results on the field. Camps are fine but thats not real football where you have to make decisions instantly and actually run an offense.
