'17 IN QB Hunter Johnson (Former UT Commit 8/23/15) (Clemson commit)

Per Austin Price

Elsewhere both Tee Higgins and Hunter Johnson were on campus and visited early and often on this Saturday. Johnson indicated his relationship with Nick Sheridan has really blossomed as of late and the two have a very nice rapport with one another. Johnson has really taken the bull by the horn's when addressing his ability to recruit other top players in this class of 2017. We will have more coverage as the night goes on.

Dobbs inaccuracies are more than made up by his running ability, improv/creativity, and elusiveness. We finished 3rd in the SEC in rushing. Dobbs is also the main reason sack numbers are down. If QD was starter, it would hinder Hurd and Kamara in a bad way. QD is zero threat to run. Dobbs isn't an accurate QB, but he is the reason the offense is so successful. Jones does have the right option at QB and it isn't even close.
I am not sure you can beat really good defenses without throwing the ball well, unless you have a really, really good defense.

He's the head of his class. The elite of the elite and Saturday he was in his comfort zone in Knoxville for a December junior day. Brownsburg, Indiana signal-caller Hunter Johnson handled the trip to Rocky Top like he handles the throwing in the pocket, with a calm and smooth demeanor.

"It was great to get back down here," Johnson said. "We came down for the North Texas game and we've been wanting to get back down and hang out with the staff and just be around Tennessee. Coach Jones was excited to see us and he is always happy when we get down. We know the campus inside and out and this was just about being around the program."

Spending a good portion of his time with offensive coordinator Mike Debord and Tennessee offensive graduate assistant Nick Sheridan. Sheridan has been speculated to be joining Butch Jones staff as a possible quarterbacks coach and Johnson was asked about that possibility.

"We love him," Johnson said. "We love coach Sheridan. He's been here ever since I started getting recruited here and I talk with him every week. I have a great relationship with him and we are excited for him with the role that he is taking now."

Earlier in the week, the father of 2016 Tennessee quarterback commitment Jarrett Guarantano endorsed Sheridan. He played quarterback at Michigan and then followed in his father, Bill's footsteps by diving head first into coaching. The younger Sheridan has coached quarterbacks at a couple of different stops early in his career and Johnson firmly believes that Sheridan will set him up for success.

"I feel like he can enhance my game," Johnson said. "He played in college and he knows what we are going through personally as a quarterback in college at a big level. I just think he is good at building relationships with his quarterbacks and building trust. I talk to him all the time and I feel really comfortable with him."

Getting the chance to hang out with fellow big time prospect and wide receiver Tee Higgins, Johnson says the two have took the lead in trying to make sure the 2017 class is special.

"We messaged back and forth," Johnson said. "There are quite a few guys in our class that we message with and we've been building relationships quite a bit. I've direct messaged with (Amari) and getting to know him a little bit better. I think I've been able to take a role in building a strong class here."

Both of Tennessee’s big-time 2017 commits were in Knoxville Saturday in the nation’s top-ranked quarterback according to 247Sports in Hunter Johnson and the nation’s No. 6 receiver in Tee Higgins. This was Johnson and Higgins second time hanging out together.

“We had a great day,” Johnson said. He was joined by both his parents. “We hung out with the coaches all day and talked with them all day and talked about football and the bowl game and how they’re playing Northwestern, which is crazy (Johnson’s older brother Cole is a receiver for the Wildcats), and how we’re going to be down there. We were able to hang out and talk all day which was nice.”

Johnson gave his verbal to Butch Jones, Mike DeBord and the staff back in August. He attended a couple games this fall, with this being his first time back since the North Texas game. “From this year compared to last year they’re making a lot of progress,” Johnson said. “You can see in the games they won and the games they lost, they lost by a point here and four points there, they’re so close right now and they’re so young right now, they have a lot of potential for the years to come.”

Johnson enjoyed being around Jones and the staff. “It was nice to spend 1-on-1 time, face-to-face time and talk about life and football. It was a relaxing day.”

Just curious but how is 2017 a rebuilding year? After 2016, the rebuilding should be over.

Just like Florida had to rebuild in 2007 after the 2006 national title. I expect we'll be good in 2017, just not a national title contender.

We'll potentially lose our 6 best players in 2016 (Dobbs, Hurd, Barnettt, Sutton, JRM, and Kamara). Those are star players at critical positions. Don't think it'll be that easy to replace.

2018 should be a national title contending season though.

Our Defense will be so ridiculously stacked by then that it will ease the attrition pain. And on O you've got worst case an upgrade everywhere except RB and TE. Assuming one of the QBs rise up to the occasion. Out of 3, one likely will.

Yep and we are in on some really good RB prospects next year.
