Mathieu if I remember correctly was not given an offer until after he tore up LSU's camp.... IIRC he was offered by the Vols after their camp, and about a month later he was given a commit and took it on the spot at LSU. Yes, the Vols did spot him in camp and gave him an offer... not sure if it was committable. Many LSU fans were actually upset at the offer as Mathieu was pegged up to that point to be a nobody, maybe end up at Tulane. If iirc, really LSU and Tennessee were the only schools after him, before that he was basically a no star with the rating agencies. He would have probably never gotten a offer if he didn't come to camp.... Les leaves a lot of guys on the table that don't come to camp.
The Vols have done a good job (mostly) with pin pointing some diamond in the rough with La. recruits. There have been a few misfires but that is bound to happen i.e. Bourque. The one I thought LSU should have offered and didn't was Otha Peters, who originally committed to the Vols than jumped and went to Razorbacks, than left that program and now plays for the Ragin Cajuns. Les was probably right on that one as well. There have been a few other players that have done well with TCU that Les didn't offer but the list is pretty short... the big one is Eddie Lacy, but that was not because of the lack of talent.
Don't get me wrong, Les has picked some (quite a few) duds but he very rarely undershoots on the in-state guys. Labruzza has had a LSU offer for some time, and has a good relationship with the staff, he comes to the camps, and I think he is going to the camp this weekend as well. Vincent is very high on LSU's list, and is the #1 target for LSU either way. It just looks like LSU is still recruiting but making alternative arrangements.
BTW, thanks guys for all the nice comments. :hi: It really is a great forum and I don't have to worry about the purple koolaid drinkers. LOL
