'17 MS WR Jordan Murphy (UT signee)

I like Byrd at WR.

The myth of him at CB is so overblown. Could he do it? Yeah. But I see why we put him on offense. Develop the secondary. There is talent over there. We need Byrd and Jennings to do the heavy lifting at WR next season with a RS frosh qb.

Myth???? Did you watch him in the AA game? Did you watch him on defense in HS? He's an animal on defense.

As of right now, the staff wants to keep Byrd on offense. They see real play-making potential in him with his speed and dynamic moves.

They have to keep him on offense because we lack playmakers. But we need him at corner because we don't have playmakers there. Wherever Byrd plays next year is going to be where the coaches think we would worse off without him. The main point here is we need more clearly talented players like Byrd that come in ready to go. We need more big-time talent.

If he only gets 2 touches a game on offense send him to defense period. Hopefully Scott will feed guys on the perimeter a lot more creative this year.

This is the biggest argument for moving him to defense IMO. Unless we're really going to feature him in the game plans and get him the ball a lot, he'll have more opportunities to impact things for us in defense.

Yes and I saw Kyle Phillips in the army game as well. A high school game against an offense with a few days practice together does not equate to SEC football. Like I said. Could he play corner? Sure. Our coaches aren't morons. Even if some keyboard scouts think they know better, they most likely don't.

People just blow these kids up in their mind and then the myth grows and grows. John Kelly gets 100 yards and you start talking heisman. Then next year when he doesn't do so well it will be some coach's fault for not taking this heisman candidate and getting 200+ a week.

He better get 8 targets per game or move him. Was a complete waste last year.

If Martin lived up to his billing and Sutton stayed healthy then Byrd would have wasted away on the bench.

He wasn't wasted at all. Gained SEC experience. It doesn't happen overnight for these guys. Meachem and Malone are perfect examples. It takes a while for most to reach their potential no matter how talented they are. Then you get one awesome season from them and they go from 5* bust to early entry into the NFL draft overnight.

You get an amen for that one.

I'd hope so, but we've got no reason to assume he'll get a big number of touches.

Sure we do. Three of our top four receivers from last year are gone leaving an opportunity. Byrd was the next receiver down in catches. Unless one of the younger receivers outplays him, it only makes common sense that he will fill the void and get increased touches. The more touches he gets, the more the coaches will notice they need to get him the ball more.

Kelly kinda looks damn good every time he hits the field.

Phillips played behind the best DE in America and has been injured.

Byrd is a monster DB. And I will continue to say it. He's a playmaker at WR and a SPECIAL DB.

He's a great athlete and coming out of HS, he was touted as a shut down corner and PR. Was wasted at WR last year. RS would have been better.

I probably should have said evidence instead of reason. But at this point, it's just an assumption that he'll see a great deal more targets.

The most target's we've seen a WR get in a season for us under Butch was Pig with 54 in 2014. That's 4.15 receptions per game. That was under Bajakian, and he loved her sweeps, so Pig also got another 15 touches on the ground to give him a whopping average of 5.13 touches per game. The next closest to him was Malone last year with 3.86 receptions per game.

And both of those guys were he #1 WRs. Jennings had the best year of a #2 WR under Butch in 2016 averaging 3 receptions per game (and that's with a bowl game where he was targeted 10-12 times for 6 receptions).

With Jennings set to be the number 1 WR and uncertainty as to what we'll have at QB, you can make a pretty good argument that we shouldn't expect Byrd to get the number of touches we'd hope to see from an athlete of his caliber.

He'll see an increase, no doubt.

If he is as good as the Internet scouts think he is then redshirting him and expecting a 5th year is foolish.

So if he's a shut down corner like you seem to think he's not gonna be here for a 5th year so a redshirt would be beyond foolish. Which it is anyway. Byrd helped us last year.

Also if VN got everyone on offense their "touches" we would need to run about 200 plays a game.

And for your "posters don't more than the coaches" argument. Some of us kinda point stuff we see and then when the coaches actually does it with players it works more often than not. Most of this stuff is basic stuff that we point out. Nothing complicated besides using a player for what he can do and not forcing him within a scheme.
