Why is that surprising? Butch and co have been on this kid for awhile and we've always been at or near the top. He named us his leader last June after a visit.
Oh, it's a pleasant surprise, don't get me wrong. Just seems like Clemson has a lot of "momentum" right now when we square off for recruits. Hopefully we can get Foster and Higgins though.
:good!:
Good points. I remember the recent losses (Hunter Johnson and Amari Rogers) more than the wins.
Hubbs said last week that if we got Higgins, we were likely done at WR this recruiting cycle. Obviously, would rather get Higgins on board than Rogers anyway.
If curt was still on the team, I would be just as curious. Because, as I've said many times, Shoop hasn't used a hybrid DE/OLB in pass stops and has played his SLB out in space in ways we never saw Jancek use SLBs. So I'd say it's a pretty valid question.I think you're over thinking this.
If Curt was still on the team, would you expect Shoop to not play him at strong side linebacker?
The coaches were clear. Austin Smith is being groomed for a Curt Maggitt type role. I made no leaps. You're the one going through the mental gymnastics of trying to distort a pretty clear statement.

Plus, If you think about it, it seems unlikely we see Smith play much of a hybrid role in 2016 anyway. We have at least 4-5 guys who would play in front of him at DE in the nickel. Why not just have him focus on SLB if he's going to be playing there so much more than DE? At PSU, Shoop used his base 4-3 as much as 60% of the time, even against some spread opponents. If the plan was for Smith to be at SLB for up to 60% of the snaps in 2016, it seems like that would have been seen in the spring.
But maybe they're just thinking ahead to 2017 when we'll need more depth at DE and a guy who can fill a hybrid role will be more valuable. My only point is that we don't know for sure how exactly we'll see Smith used in 2016. Even if he's being groomed to be used exactly like Maggit, I doubt we see that in 2016. Maggit was one of our best at playing DE while he was here, so it made sense for him to play both. In 2016, I'm not sure we can say the same about Smith. At least not as long as Barnett, Vereen, Lewis, Phillips, Taylor, Mixon, and Kongbo are all in the mix as well.
He was at the Oklahoma game and kept talking about the atmosphere for months. I've been feeling good about this kid since that game.
