'17 TN DL Rutger Reitmaier (Oregon commit)

All that says is that he is a transfer, not that he is excluded from being an initial counter. It is my understanding that he would be an initial counter at both schools. Like Jave said, if that were a loophole, it would be exploited by many coaches.

It is also worth noting that if RR is transferring without a hardship circumstance, he would have to get a waiver from Oregon or would lose a year of eligibility.

Does he lose a year of eligibility or just have to sit out a year? I know that if Oregon does not give him a release, he will have to pay his own way the first year, but am not familiar with the rule regarding losing a year of eligibility.

Yet you won't be able to find a specific example which there would be numerous ones if this was the way the actual rule worked. It's worded weird in some parts but yet any compliance office will tell you once a kid goes on scholarship at a new university they will count as a counter against current cap unless they're a grad transfer then they only count against 85. I'm going to tap out on the discussion though because I don't think I can add anything further at this point and arguing about it just makes me look like an ass.

I appreciate the input you've given. Just trying to understand how all this works. :hi:

It would be nice if the regulations were a little clearer but it is the NCAA we're talking about. I did some more digging and found this article from the NCAA about relaxing the transfer rules for Penn State athletes after the sanctions: http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2012-07-23/transfer-rules-loosened-penn-st-players

The relevant part is:
4. Financial Aid limitations
• If a student-athlete transfers for the fall of 2012 to a school that has reached its scholarship limits, the school may exceed these numbers for the 2012-13 academic year, provided it reduces such limits proportionately in the 2013-14 academic year. For example, if one student-athlete transfers to a Division I school already at the legislated limits of 25 initial counters and 85 overall counters for 2012-13, the school will be limited to 24 initial counters and 84 overall counters in 2013-14.

I think it confirms that transfers count as initial counters. Subject to all the various rules and timings of course. Link if anyone cares: https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/bylawView?id=8810

I was later corrected. It was a conference specific rule instead of an NCAA rule and wouldn't apply in this case. He'll sit a year, but that will count as his redshirt.

He'll get a release. Even Saban grants them, eventually...too much of a PR nightmare nowadays.

So it sounds like I was wrong. Hyams was reporting today that we would likely not pursueRR because he would count against the class. Sooooo... my bad😬

The article said that he would only count against the 85 limit.

Regardless of whether he becomes a Vol or not, it's really sad to see a kid go to a school that was supposedly "his dream school" and find out otherwise. So many time recruits say that a particular school seems like "home", family, or other terms meaning that he would be a natural fit. And when he gets there, it is totally the opposite.

One thing I give CBJ credit, he and his staff work hard to make the team a welcoming home/ family for incoming recruits. Of course, some times it just doesn't work out no matter how hard you try.

Would really like to have RR become a VFL. We'll see.

No problem. It's worded weird in parts so I can understand the confusion. This kid is likely Vandy bound anyways with his girl being in Nashville.

Little known fact... historians dismissed the biblical account of the Assyrian empire centraled in Nineveh, recorded in the Bible, because it seemed to be missing off the face of the earth and any other historical texts...

That is until about 150 years ago (IIRC) the whole thing was discovered under Mosul, including inscriptions of people recorded in the Bible.

Just a little interesting history side note

You can still see the ruins of Ninevah a few miles south of Saddams old palace. I was there in '03 and you could still see outlines etc from the highway.

Exactly right. No kid is going to commit to a school that might not be a best fit for them and they turn out to be a virtual prisoner to a self doubting coach afraid of how to handle potential competition.

Oregon released him. He has requested permission to contact UT, Vandy, Duke and Michigan. Barton Simmons says Vandy is the frontrunner.

Talked to someone who knows him and has talked to him. Vandy is the clear leader at this point.

I like every DT we have over him at the moment. If he was a DE I'd be more concerned with landing him.
