'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Butch has done a pretty good job of keeping the best in state talent in Tennessee. 2013 was bad because he had to repair the fractured relationships Dooley created within the state. But in 2014, he got 9 of the top 11 in the state. In 2015, Butch got 3 of the top 4 and in 2016 he got 2 out the top 5. He does seem to be trending downward in in state recruiting.

Tennessee and Georgia are not even in the same universe when it comes to recruiting is what I am saying. Georgia has also been a consistently winning program at least for the past 15 years or so. So IMO, comparing Smart and Butch when it comes to recruiting isnt fair or accurate.

So, in your opinion, do you think Georgia just has way more talent than the state of Tennessee? D4H has made a heads-up post & I have looked into it deeper for 2018 & 2019 & the state of Tennessee is absolutely loaded with what's going to be a lot of 4* & 5* players.

Much more evenly balanced & not as many 3* talent coming from the state of Tennessee. It's key that we have a coach whether it be CBJ or whoever get this top talent to Knoxville for their college football playing days since we are going to have a lot to choose from or should I say offer. Thanks!

I have a funny feeling that we will not get Smith with all the uncertainty in the air. When is the last time we got the #1 rated recruit? (via ESPN)

Traditionally, Georgia has had much more superior talent and its not really been close. Now the gap between Georgia and Tennessee high school football might be changing but I still think Georgia is the better school for HS talent. I hope whoever the coach is at Tennessee is able to pull the instate talent very frequently.

Bryce Brown maybe?

Bryce Brown was the #2 rated recruit in his class. It's Peyton Manning from 1994. It's been that long yes. :eek:hmy: BTW, wonder where Bryce Brown is playing football now? Is he in the CFL maybe or not playing at all anywhere? Hard to believe if he's not. What a wasted talent there.

Bryce Brown was #1 according to multiple sites ESPN wouldn't open for me, but scout and rivals had him #1 ahead of Barkley

I have a feeling we still land Smith with him being extremely close to his sister. I think it's a done deal but on the other hand, no way we land Akers, Moore, Felix, Wade, Gibbs, if Butch is on the hot seat next year.

Callahan talked to him today.

Smith is coming off his official visit to Ohio State over the weekend, and it sounds like the Buckeyes definitely made a good impression on him. He also has been on official visits to Alabama and Ole Miss, and he's scheduled to take an official visit to Tennessee this weekend before announcing his decision next Tuesday, Dec. 6. He said he will host coaches from basically every school he's still considering over the next few days leading up to his visit, including a visit with Alabama assistant coach Billy Napier on Friday right before he travels to Knoxville. Tennessee coach Butch Jones and a few of the Vols' assistants are scheduled to visit with Smith either tomorrow or Wednesday.
Smith said he has a good relationship with some of Tennessee's players, and there's really nothing he needs to see when he returns to Knoxville this weekend. He said he's simply looking forward to spending more time with players while he's on campus. He also shrugged off any potential impact of Tennessee's loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday and the Vols' performance in general this season, pointing to Ole Miss' 5-7 season and Notre Dame's rough year as an example of the ebbs and flows of college football programs.
He said he recently thought he knew where he was going, but he recently has been thinking about a bit more and now isn't quite so sure. It sounds like he has at least a little bit of thinking to do between now and next Tuesday.
I believe the main contenders right now are Tennessee, Alabama and Ohio State, although Smith wasn't willing to rule out any of the six teams he has been considering since he named his list of finalists in July.

I know recruiting is about to take a nosedive(even worse than its been this year), but I hope Trey wants to be a Vol in spite of the lame duck staff. Don't worry kid, you'll like the next coach too.

If he wants to go somewhere else I can't blame him. Why not go somewhere that will maximize your potential. Bama or Ohio State would do that and are infinitely better coached than us.

If he picks Bama or OSU, then, the meltdown will ensue. I hate that we don't have any reliable insiders any more. But, hopefully he commits to us. I think we are definitely still in it, he's just not the lock that we thought. That does suck, I must admit.

He's still one of my least favorite posters on this entire board but he's probably right on this one. Smith was all Vol until Butch screwed up this whole season. Butch and the staff are meeting up with him tomorrow so that still gives me a glimpse of hope. Ohio St. still worries me quite a bit.

Me too after the season they're having & the way their program is trending compared to ours. I'd have to pick them as the favorites now when 6+ months ago is was basically 100% Vol lock.

Bama is also not out of it. I'd have to place us 3rd or maybe even 4th after what's happened to us this season. If he doesn't put as much into it like us fans in which he seems not to have then it might not have much affect on him.

He could still end up being a Vol. We sure don't have long to wait & I'm already anxious waiting on him to decide on 12-6-16.

Yes, right now we're in 3rd or 4th. OSU & Bama are two teams ahead of us right now because of the state of their programs while our is in turmoil. You had me on "Ignore"? You're not the first. Can't stand honesty or opinion can you? :eek:lol::wink:

I agree, TN is 3rd AND 4th. Btw, they are also 1st and 2nd.

He is close to his sister, he isn't going to put her through the nonsense she would have to deal with if he didn't come to, fair or unfair. This one was done the day she was hired.
