'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Haven't been on here since the day before Vandy... but wanted to post this.

I had lunch at Maple Hall today before the basketball game. CBJ, Debord, Mahoney, Thig, Welton, Jack Jones, Kendrick, and others were there bowling and seemed to be having a great time with Trey. I met Coach Jones briefly and took a photo with him, and said "hope you guys can lock Trey up this weekend!"

He said "we're trying."

His sister was there also, by the way.

Trey sat at the game with JG, Jashon, Jack Jones, with Butch right behind them.

I made it a point over and over again in the preseason to say that I did not blame the staff for the state of this years recruiting. I was very disappointed then, and even more so now in the crapfest that this class currently is. I believe they did their best fighting against all the negative BS in the media during the off season. I do however blame Butch and friends for how it is going now. It is a result of their massive failure and stupid squandering of talent this season, plus Butch trying to jump ship. That is absolutely their fault.

I honestly don't remember all the details, but I will definitely take your word for it. It does seem to be trending downwards. Getting Trey Smith to sign would be a step back in the right direction.

Landing Trey Smith will go a long way in salvaging this class from a perception standpoint and will add an essential player to the class, which could still be quite good but not the mythical '17 class that was rumored to materialize. I think the OL class is going to be quite good if Smith is on board. I think we add TJ Moore as well. Those two and Locklear and Calbert should be an excellent OL class. Chandler is a legit RB. We are still in the running for another high caliber RB or two. I wish Butch would make up with Hayden and wrest him away from Arkansas. I like Murphy a lot. Jaylen Harris would be a huge addition. All in all, while missing a QB and Tee Higgins, this would be a very good offensive class. I think defensively we are lagging. Certainly, there are some good prospects but it doesn't have the look or feel of championship class right now. If LaBryan Ray and some others find their way to Knoxville, I will feel much different but I have concerns on defense right now.

Imperative for us to have any chance at a strong recruiting Finish which is crucial for our programs next few yr success regardless of coach.

Every Vol should be rooting hard for a huge close.

I agree with most of this. I would really like that O-line group as well, and Chandler is huge get. This WR class could already be sneaky good, and Harris would make it even better.

On defense, DT is the big concern. Losing the Gaddys took that from a position of strength for this class to a major question mark IMO. We also have several commits on that side of the ball right now who just strike me as being mediocre prospects.

Getting Trey will certainly help.....I don't know about "going a long way in salvaging the class". It'll take a good bit more than just getting an in-state kid who, quite honestly, should've been a virtual lock to begin with.

Now, if Jones pulls in 3-4 other top recruits to boot at the 11th hour, then we can maybe get into the top 10-12 class rankings and can talk about changing perceptions....or better yet, reality.

Smith may be the 1st lineman is ages that could literally start on an NFL team. Physically I mean. Kid is a freak of nature.
