'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

If this kid picks UT is he a starter day one? I'm not questioning his ability at all I'm just wanting to discuss how he'll fit into the depth chart next year... I just feel like if we'd redshirt a guy like Richmond there's at least a chance at giving this young man a year to develop before what I expect to be an impressive career.

No. Richmond and Chance Hall will be our starting tackles.

Smith is good, but I think we're past the days of starting true freshman linemen. I also don't see him beating out a third year Richmond or Hall or a fifth year Kendrick.

True. But if Butch didn't let Richmond leave the state I can't imagine him letting Trey go. And honestly I didn't think we had a chance in the world at landing him when we did.

It's not a matter of "let". Top OL are different animals. They tend to gravitate towards programs that develop their position group. We're just beginning to emerge as one such program. Richmond didn't cotton to redshirting because he was under the impression he'd be an immediate starter. Future studs won't be so jaded if we have a rep.

I agree with this. I think he would benefit from a full year of S&C to get his body ready for the SEC. It could prevent an injury somewhere down the line. Surely he knows that all of the top tier programs are going to have depth and he may have to RS.

Richmond was committed to Ole Miss and I don't believe that UT was even on his radar until the last maybe 2 months. Butch pulled out all the stops to keep him at UT. Smith is different. I believe the end of the day he genuinely wants to come to UT so in a sense we've won half the battle. The other half is what you're referring to: the résumé. If he sees significant improvement on the line this year (which I believe he will) then our chances have to look pretty good.

Butch brought the mountain to Mohammed when he staged the camp at Trey Smith's school (USJ) in Jackson last week. All the coaches, local radio broadcasting from the campus, and a bevy of VsFL that would turn Vince Lombardi's head were all calculated to impress Trey Smith......and some others too, but undeniably Smith was the main focus and motive for the whole event.
Butch has gone "above and beyond" to get the nod from Smith. Surely the young man is Ktown bound now.

"...and in last week's news..."

So if Mays can't break through how could Trey?
By the way I see Mays as a guard for some reason.

thankfully Mays RS year will be behind some seniors.

and personally I like Mays as a RT. Where LT is MORE of a pass blocker, RT is MORE of a run blocker. he is definitely athletic enough to play tackle, but what helps your statement is how we pull our Guards a lot. maybe like jack jones, who came in as a tackle and played really well at guard.

Smith said the camp “definitely” helped the Vols, and he admitted Tennessee is “a top school” and “a top-five team” in his mind, although he’s not planning to name an official group of favorites until next month.

“They’re a top school, a top-five team,” said Smith, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 3 overall prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2017 class. “I mean, I like them."

“My sister went to Tennessee,” he said. “She worked with the legendary (women’s basketball coach) Pat Summitt. Always going down to that campus, I’ve always had a good experience. There are pretty good people in Tennessee, and it’s a powerful program. -247
Yea Count "the all knowing about Jackson recruits" Volcula says he leans towards two different schools. Haha smdh

If you have a day one starter on the OL, you've done it wrong

Bama Robinson, Ole Miss Tunsil are two that immediately come to mind.

So it CAN happen. I think Smith is a Vol and he just comes in and competes as expected. The rest takes care of itself.

From what I understand (limited knowledge).... he is very down to earth and knows a lot about the process of recruiting and playing time, etc.
I "feel" he is in this for the long haul.

Great Foundation............and you can take that SEVERAL ways!!!!!

I feel like Smith could be fated to play OG, depending on what his size really is. There's been some variance in his measurements. If he's 6'4, he might be a better fit to play inside.

Mays, IMO, is a prototype mauler of a RT.

But if he is 6'5" (the magic cutoff height to play OT) he will be a T. Isn't Chance 6'4"?? Brad Hopkins was 6'3" and an NFL pro bowler. Maybe Smith is only 6'4" but has longer arms than another guy that's 6'6"?? :)

I'm just picking at ya Darth. I usually chime in on this subject. I do agree, ideally you want that 6'5" - 6'8" guy at OT but that doesn't mean a 6'3"-6'4" guy can't play there.

Your are correct .Arm length and quick feet are the important things for tackles.

Weighed in at 6-5.5, 299 at The Opening Chicago last month. He looks remarkably lean for a 16-year-old 300-pounder and could probably carry 325+ easily.
