'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Smith said the camp “definitely” helped the Vols, and he admitted Tennessee is “a top school” and “a top-five team” in his mind, although he’s not planning to name an official group of favorites until next month.

“They’re a top school, a top-five team,” said Smith, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 3 overall prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2017 class. “I mean, I like them."

“My sister went to Tennessee,” he said. “She worked with the legendary (women’s basketball coach) Pat Summitt. Always going down to that campus, I’ve always had a good experience. There are pretty good people in Tennessee, and it’s a powerful program. -247

If we dont get Smith after basically holding a camp in his honor, well I just dont know.

The staff does everything they can to land prospects that are extremely high on their board. There's nothing more that you can do. If the kid does not want to come to Tennessee after being recruited by this staff, they never were going to come. It sure isn't for lack of effort.

Agree 100%....

But recruiting has been so disappointing so far and its already June and lawsuit and no in-state kids like us they are so mean...

Mike Farrell explains why Rivals has Trey as a 4 star and outside of their Top 250:

Rankings are always a sensitive subject, and the biggest controversy this cycle appears to surround offensive tackle Trey Smith, who suddenly shot up to into the top six on two sites after an impressive performance at the NIKE Camp in Chicago. He became the No. 1 player in the country on another site even before his performance in Chicago.

So why is he a four-star on Rivals who isn’t in our Rivals250?

I’ll admit we are being cautious here and want to see more of Smith for a few reasons.

His junior film is awesome -- he’s pancaking everything that moves and hits the second level like a running back. However, he plays for a D2 school in Tennessee and the kids he’s pile-driving aren’t close to elite athletes.

And Smith is listed anywhere from 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-4, depending on the site. He doesn’t look as tall or long levered as the former measurement on film.

However, make no doubt this isn’t a situation like Matt Elam (the defensive tackle not the defensive back) or Lamont Gaillard, two big men who also rocketed up the charts of our competition in recent years. Those guys should have never sniffed a fifth star, much less been in the top 10 like they were on some sites.

Smith looks like a million bucks on film and perhaps our concern over his competition level will make us look slow on this one. I know Ole Miss and Tennessee fans think so.

I think his current ranking is likely his floor and his ceiling is very, very high, but we will see how he does this summer and into next season before we make our judgement.

We were correct on Elam and Gaillard, but this kid is a much, much better prospect, so I’m excited to see more as the 2017 rankings evolve.

If he had gone to a Rivals camp, he would be a 5-star.

Rivals is the worst at downgrading prospects that do not attend their camps.

When he dominates at the opening, they will have no choice.

So I'm guessing everyone else in their top 250 has been measured and plays top line competition?

I'll just say I'm not buying this explanation. Most times we never know how tall or long players are till the NFL combine so I'm not buying the inconsistent measurement excuse. Plus all these kids play low level competition compared to what they'll see in college. I'm sure there are many other players in their top 250 who play competition as weak as Trey.

This sounds like politics.

awesome. glad to hear were beingn aggressive on the trail, something i thing this staff has lost in the last couple of years. also, Butch is saying to his lazy staffers, if you wont recruit, im taking you to them.

the whole idea of ranking anything under 18 years of age is weird.

Possible top 10 worst post of the year, it is much easier to pull top 5 recruiting classes when kids know they can play from day one. This coaching staff has us as a legit top 10 team after what they inherited. Sad:dunno:

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I agree with you.
